We have officially hit 37 days in quarantine over at Second Society Report. And while we have social media, Netflix and frequent zoom calls to occupy our time, nothing has been a saving grace quite like new music.
With new releases this month from Hayley Williams, Twenty One Pilots, and a full album from All Time Low- the alternative music scene is thriving.
But in addition to our classic favorites, we’ve also been super fortunate to experience new music from a wide variety of other artists- including A Day To Remember, Christian French, and more.
And while we know we love these tracks, we wanted to make sure that you also got the chance to hear them and fall in love just like we did.
So without further adieu- here are our four top tracks of this week’s new releases to help get you through the weekend slump.
Christian French – “i think too much”
We all overthink. But not all of us have written catchy, seemingly uplifting songs about doing it. And that is one of many things that set Christian French apart.
Tapping into feelings of anxiety, isolation, and excessive contemplation, French hit our radar after his release of “crowded room” earlier this year, and now has once more caught our attention with his new song “i think too much.”
An upbeat pop track, “i think too much” documents the feeling of being trapped inside your own head and trying to find your way out and towards happiness. And though the song’s message is far from happy, the entire song is catchy and 100% dance worthy- which will lift your spirits on the gloomiest of days.
John The Ghost – “Rolled Down Window”
A familiar voice to fans of The Maine, John The Ghost – better known as John O’Callaghan- has released a brand new track for the first time in three years.
And while fans of the singer have been blessed by new music from The Maine in the interim, John The Ghost’s new track provides fans a new side of the singer- and to the surprise of many, it’s an up-beat and happy one.
“Rolled Down Windows,” is the perfect song for a summer drive down the freeway with your sun roof open and music blaring. And since long isolated drives are one of the few things you can safely do while social distancing, this release came just in time to quell some weekend blues. And it serves as the perfect reminder that things CAN and will get better. CC: John The Ghost’s last release: “Sour Grapes.”
Abi Rose Kelly – “Polaroids and Violence”
Newcomer Abi Rose Kelly has already kicked her career off with a strong footing.
With her debut track “James’ Corsa” gaining her over 60,000 listeners on Spotify alone, the soon-to-be rock star is now gaining even more attention for the release of her sophomore single “Polaroids and Violence.”
A nostalgic track that samples classic rock instrumentals overlayed by Kelly’s unique indie vocal styling- “Polaroids and Violence” is all about navigating the turbulence that comes with growing up.
And while it may not be as up-beat and poppy as the two previous tracks we’ve featured, it stands it’s ground as one of the best releases of the week purely for it’s craftsmanship. It sounds like a track we’ve heard one hundred times before, but every listen shows us a new element to love. From vocal styling, to guitar riffs, and catchy percussion, this track proves once again that Abi Rose Kelly is an artist to watch.
A Day To Remember – “Mindreader”
We’ve all been in relationships where we cannot quite figure out what our partner wants from us. Whether platonic or romantic, communication is the key to a happy existance.
And that’s exactly what A Day To Remember’s new song “Mindreader” is about- the struggle to communicate.
A pop-punk beat with catchy lyrics and frontman Jeremy McKinnon’s unique vocals, this is one of our favorite tracks of the week and definitely one we could listen to on repeat.
