The ending of a relationship is always one of the most difficult things to go through- especially when ending a relationship that maybe shouldn’t have started to begin with.

And while this is part of life and something virtually everyone experiences at least once, it doesn’t make it any easier or any more predictable- which is exactly what the latest single by Abby Jasmine and Smoke DZA discusses.

A song about navigating a toxic relationship where both parties are refusing to admit their mistakes as the relationship takes a turn south, “First Day Out” is a hip hop track that will have you bopping along while also also getting you ready to make sure your past partners right very wrong they’ve ever committed.

Opening up with Abby Jasmine’s verse, the song begins by the singer sharing her experience with dating a man she dubs a “clown.” While accusing him of cheating with several women and saying he never buys her anything, the track gets listeners amped up- ready to jump to Abby’s defense despite the fact she is clearly also playing a part in the relationship’s toxicity.

It is then that Smoke DZA comes in with his rap, sharing his side of the story and accusing his partner of making up stories about his infidelity when he is actually dedicated to making sure she lives comfortably- shouting out the several bags and clothes he’s bought for her and repeating that he’d never try to “play” her.

As the song comes to a close, Abby repeats her claims, leaving listeners to be the judge of which side of the story they believe and letting you form your own opinions on the fictional relationship.

This track is a perfect reminder that toxic relationships take several forms, and that the truth may not be as clear to decipher as it appears from the outside.
