Genre blending duo Grand Tapestry have just released their new album Tides, via Gravitas Recordings, and it is one you do not want to miss out on.
Made up of Eligh and Alam Khan, Grand Tapestry is a fusion of sonic powers. With Eligh bringing his experience as a member of world famous hip hop groups Living Legends and The Grouch & Eligh; and Alam Khan, who is the son of the legendary late Maestro Ali Akbar Khan- known as the greatest Sarode player of modern times and responsible for bringing Indian music to the west- the duo use their musical histories and life experiences to create songs that feel fresh and new while also connecting deeply with their listeners. And their new LP is a perfect example.
Tides is described as reflecting “the tides of change that the human race, planet, and cosmos are presently experiencing.” Humankind has not faced an invisible challenge as great as Covid-19 before. Grand Tapestry take you on a healing journey and I now get what people mean when they say “music is medicine.” The duo cleverly intertwine traditional Indian instruments with cutting edge hip-hop beats and create a hypnotic fusion of sounds.
Tides consists of six original tracks and three bonus instrumentals. The lead single “Seagulls” that features Raaginder on the violin and Kamaljeet Ahluwalia on the santoor has a creative music video to accompany the unique sound of Grand Tapestry. The video is set on the beach while a dancer mimics the movement of seagulls while humans explore the notion of time and its influence on love. Grand Tapestry have been featured in The New York Times and NPR. Their captivating music video “Seagulls” was premiered by Rolling Stone India and is the first track from Tides.
Being brave enough to experiment with sounds to create a niche for themselves has definitely paid off on this LP as it is rare to hear a genre as popular as hip-hop combined with “World Music.” They will reach new audiences and gain new fans as a result. For those looking for a different immersive experience, close your eyes and let your mind be taken on a journey.
