Is there anyone who likes a situationship? Undefined, uncommitted and lurking in this grey area. Most of us have been there and that’s why TONYB.’s latest release is so captivating.
TONYB. captures modern dating perfectly in “You Knew What This Was.” This ode to situationships has a heavy late 90s and early 2000s R&B influence. The Nashville native credits his range of musical and vocal dynamics to the likes of Aaliyah, D’Angelo and Usher.
His smokey vocals complement the ethereal harmonies in the first half of the song, after which the cascading synth draws the listener in. You’ll find yourself either singing along or swaying to the beat by the end of the track.
TONYB. clearly articulates the world of modern dating that is convenience and short-term circumstances as he soulfully sings:
“I think we held on too long,
‘Cause we were lonely.
So let’s stop acting out this movie scene.
We knew that it wasn’t love,
Baby you knew what this was.”
His conversational lyrics make us connect further as it is a relatable situation. You feel like you’re not alone and we all make similar mistakes of getting tangled up in avoidable situations. The message from his point of view is “We never said forever” and his silky smooth tone will have you in your feelings.
Singer/ songwriter TONYB. is definitely one to watch having landed on multiple editorial Spotify playlists including Fresh Finds and R&B Fresh Finds, with his music racking up over 350,000 streams to date.
