After releasing his third studio album under the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness this past November, rocker Andrew McMahon and his band have been been steadily gaining traction in the alternative music scene.

Having come from two successful pop punk projects, including Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, this comes as no surprise to fans of McMahon and his previous projects.

And, it comes as even less of a surprise to those tracking McMahon’s career that he has been working alongside several other notable musicians- including the latest: Butch Walker.

Having worked as a singer, songwriter, and producer for a wide variety of musicians (including emo heroes The Academy Is…, Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco), Walker has been on McMahon’s radar for a long time, as he explained to him in their Ruby Red Studio sit down last week.

“I always felt like we were homies that were meant to make music,” McMahon told Walker. “And then when I started writing these songs, I called our kind of mutual manager and was like ‘how should we do this?’ and he, finally, after two records of me asking ‘should we have Butch do some songs on this record?’ he was like ‘I think Butch is the right guy for this record.”

The duo then discussed their collaboration, and performed a stripped down version of McMahon’s track “Paper Rain,” off of his latest record, “Upside Down Flowers.”
