Rising indie artist Belle Tower is examining toxic relationships and the male gaze in her new single, “Small.”
As the third single to be released by Belle Tower- also known as singer/songwriter Isabella Harned- since their streaming debut in 2019, “Small” confronts a feeling that nearly every woman or non-binary person has experienced: the idea of simultaneously wanting to be seen as valuable to a person with more control than you- usually a man- while also resenting the desire and the fact you care about their opinions at all.
With lyrics relatable to both professional and romantic relationships, “Small” battles the idea of making ourselves seem smaller in order to be seen as agreeable- something that happens far too often in the music industry alone.
“As a woman in the music industry, the lyrics dance around the story of seeking approval from someone who continuously makes you feel small and speaks to the microaggressions I experienced in these kinds of toxic dynamics that I know many can relate to,” Harned shared.
“In reflecting on these themes, “Small” grasps at the grit of standing in your power, knowing your worth, and resisting the male gaze.”
“Small” is also the latest single to be released off of the singer’s upcoming EP tend to, which is set to debut April 27th.
You can stream “Small,” along with previous releases “Swell” and “The Garden,” out now, and if you enjoy what you hear, be sure to follow Belle Tower on social media for all updates, new releases and more info on tend to.
