Brigitte Mena has officially released her sophomore album, and it is one you don’t want to miss out on.
“Element,” which dropped yesterday is the indie-rock singer’s second full length album, following 2018’s “Maslow.” Written over the course of a year- from late 2018 through 2019- “Element,” gives listeners a look into Mena’s own life and inner thoughts.
Heavily inspired by the human psyche, mental health and the intricacies of relationships, “Element” was created out of the singer’s desire to write one song a month over the course of the year- documenting ‘elements’ of whatever was happening in her life at the time. The results being a 44 minute collection full of heartfelt anecdotes, intricate lyricism, and an overall clear indie rock aesthetic.
With Mena’s vocal styling emitting a strong emotional vulnerability while simultaneously remaining powerful and controlled, “Element” likens her to a mix of Delores O’Riordan (The Cranberries) and Gwen Stefani (No Doubt). Switching between softer ballads, acoustic stylings and electric guitar heavy rock tracks, “Element” spans several niches of the “rock” genre.
From groovy riffs on “Captain & Crooks,” and ethereal vocals mixed with light electric guitar on “Seasoned Light,” to the R&B inspired undertones on “Green Lights,” and closing power ballad “Anthem,” the album offers a track for all moods and for listeners of all walks of life.
With a heartbreaking self-awareness, Mena takes listeners on a journey through self acceptance and finding themselves as they navigate love, loss, and their own internal battles.
And in addition to Mena herself, the album also features a cameo from Sherri DuPree-Bemis (Eisley) who ads her own vocal flair to “Say You Love Me” – kicking the song up a notch.
As an artist who prides themselves on creating music that is relatable and touches the hearts of their listeners, Mena successfully achieves both of those goals through “Element.”
“I create a story that is relatable to a wide range of listeners,” Mena shares. “These are songs I think we can all resonate with in one way or another.”
