Sometimes it is impossible to stop your mind from wandering and finding yourself stuck in thoughts of the past. Often leading to several unanswered “what ifs?” or wondering where you’d be had your life gone in a different path, overthinking can cause a lot of unnecessary but unpreventable stress.
And in the case of vocalist Erica Knox, it can also lead to the creation of a new single that is perhaps her best release yet.
Released Friday, “Running Inside of My Brain” is an uptempo pop track about rethinking a breakup and wondering what could have happened differently had the relationship played out better.
Using the lyrics to explain how a former parter finds themselves wandering around her mind every time she feels as though she is moving on, the song describes the inevitable torture cycle that comes with overthinking and a tendency to romanticize the past.
But instead of letting these thoughts overwhelm her and ruin her path to a better life and love on the other side, Knox uses the track as a form of acceptance and healing- reminding listeners that they don’t have to become trapped in their minds either.
“[In the song] I reflect on that time after a breakup where even after you’ve made peace and come to terms with it, something brings you back as if it happened yesterday,” the singer shared.
“You relive it all, imagining what that could have been, and everything that went wrong [and this song] serves as a reminder that you’ve gotta put yourself first when it comes to love. It’s not worth losing yourself to be with someone else, no matter how good the ending could be.”
And though this new song is only the third single to be released on Spotify by the Canadian songstress, it gives us high hopes for new music to come.
