Field Division’s latest single, “Star Where Are You,” emulates the Laurel Canyon feel.

Although the magnificent times of 60’s and 70’s California bohemia has ended, the message still remains the same. During a time when politics as well as social issues infiltrated the music scene, it made all the difference on sound. Many of the 60’s and 70’s artists expressed political views through their songs, speaking out against war, racism, and gender inequality.

These subjects are still a major part of our society today. The era of the 60s was plagued with the horrors of the Vietnam War. We see what’s going on around the world when it comes to modern tragedy. It’s easy to make a joke about how the past year has been an endless amount of horrific events. We joke about it not wanting to take it seriously. The pandemic, the unfairness in politics, how money is everything, climate change that has taken the west coast by storm, police brutality…the list seems endless.

Field Division’s newest single goes into the depth of what’s going on and how we are reacting.

The name of the song “Star Where Are You,” is a metaphor for peace. The use of the soft beat and the repetition of the word star in the lyrics. The band sings, “you want to go farther,” meaning peace isn’t a surface subject, we have to search for it and look deeper. Instead of just being complacent and wishing we had peace or we turn bitter and sad because we think we can’t change anything- saying things like, “voting is important, but does my vote even count?”

Instead of ignoring what is going on, Field Division addresses it head on by emphasizing a word that seems to escape most of us: peace. The Texas duo acknowledges that the world is angry and upset for so many reasons but the idea of peace is what drives “Star Where Are You.”

By releasing a song that focuses on soft lyrics, gentle guitar chords, and an unchanging beat, it feels like in a time of uncertainty, there is something that keeps everything connected.
