Flight or Visibility are continuing their advocacy this week through the release of their new music video “My Name (is Joanna).”
Originally released on November 20th, also known as Transgender Day of Remembrance, “My Name (is Joanna)” is a song dedicated to LGBT community members reclaiming their own stories.
Described by songwriter and performer Rafael Natan as an ode to “celebrating the agency we have as Queer and Trans people to choose what parts of our stories to tell, and when to tell them,” the track was written as a reminder to trans and non-binary persons that they are allowed to control their own narratives and encourages them to find power in telling their stories on their own time.
As for the new video, Flight or Visibility take their track to the next level with the help of director and animator Guadalupe Campos.
Intercutting a mix of bright, cartoon-style animations and live action shots of Natan, the video gives a play by play of the track’s narrative- starting in a cafe in the first verse. Recounting several situations in which people are often misgendered or where people are quick to make assumptions about those around them, the cartoon also features several of Natan’s friends singing the lyric “my name is Joanna” along with them. Showcasing just how widespread the trans/non-binary community is and reminding viewers not to make pre-determined judgements solely based on how someone acts or looks.
“This song for me is about claiming my power through self-love, and the video is a manifestation of how I want to share that love with my community,” Natan shares.
