Quarantine is the perfect time for self reflection.

It is also the perfect time to write a song, and lucky for us, singer Grace Gillespie has written the perfect reflective quarantine track, titled “Empty In The Capital.”

Released last week, “Empty In The Capital,” began as a song about Gillespie’s anxiety and agoraphobia, which she penned prior to the COVID-19 lockdown.

But as time went on and the pandemic escalated, the track took on a new meaning- representing not only Gillespie’s internal anxieties and feelings, but the overall sense of uncertainty and forced acceptance that has cloaked the globe in the past few months.

With the juxtaposition of the track’s existential lyricism and the light, almost airy sounding instrumentals, “Empty In The Capital” perfectly represents the feelings of general helplessness that most people are feeling as they navigate what several call “the new normal.”

“I think it’s a pattern we have all been through throughout lockdown,” Gillespie shares. “We are trying with all our hearts to make the most of this gift of time and be ‘grateful for the day’ but then realizing that we are sipping coffee and trying to create (or just get on with work) while ambulances are filing past.”

“There is always suffering and we are always perfecting a way to stick our head in the sand just to survive, I suppose.”
