After what feels like a year of teasing us, Philadelphia rockers Grayscale are ready to welcome us into a brand new era. Introducing Umbra.
The band’s fourth studio album, following 2019’s Nella Vita, Umbra was announced earlier this morning along with a full track list- sharing that the August 27th release will come with 11 new songs.
As for what the record means and what fans can anticipate sonically, vocalist Collin Walsh shared that Umbra will be a new “beginning.”
“In many ways, this record is the end of the beginning for us. All things before this have served as stepping stones accumulating and shaping our course, leading us now to the start of a path on which we couldn’t be any prouder, more artistically fulfilled, or more ourselves,” Walsh shared.
“Umbra is more a feeling than it is a concept; it is an energy. It is all the things we keep underneath or to ourselves. It is the cold feeling of internal conflict, the bargaining, and the wickedness that exists within a space otherwise covered in light,” he continued. “The sounds don’t necessarily match the stories, the energy doesn’t always match the intent. Like anything in this world, there are roots that run much deeper than what is seen on the surface.”
And for fans who are dying to hear more of what Umbra has to offer, the band also surprised fans with a new single and music video, which debuted at midnight.
Titled “Dirty Bombs,” the new single sounds very similarly to Nella Vita, but with a slightly more experimental feeling. Straying away from their pop punk sound of the past and moving towards a more refined pop rock sound- similar in feel to the record tryhard by The Band CAMINO- this single hints that Umbra will not be completely out of range for the band but will put more focus on their musicianship. Instead of trying to fit into a mold of how they should sound, this album will give the band room to breathe and dive further into the sound and feeling past albums have touched upon. This time diving head first- and we couldn’t be more ready to hear what is coming next.
To hear “Dirty Bombs” as well as other sneak peaks of what 2021 holds for Grayscale, be sure to follow the band on social media and catch them this summer on the Sad Summer Festival.
