She is Poppy and she is on tour.
Internet singing sensation Poppy hit Boston’s Paradise Rock Club last night during a stop on her Am I A Girl? Tour.
But before Poppy took the stage, opener and self described “gothic Wendy’s girl” Flint Eastwood wow-ed a packed crowd.
Flint Eastwood, which is actually a duo made up of Jax Anderson and her brother Seth (also known as Syblyng), are an alt-pop band from Detroit Michigan.
And while they have yet to release any feature length albums, the two captivated the audience with songs from their four EPs- the latest having been released just last October.
With heavy dance beats and lyrics about loving yourself, accepting others, and an emphasis on being “loud not pretty,” Flint Eastwood helped not only prep the audience, but fill them with positive vibes and give them plenty of vocal practice before the main act.
Then, almost as soon as they began, Flint Eastwood took their final bows and the audience became abuzz with discussion about what was to come.
Having recently rebranded herself after switching from Island to Mad Decent Records, fans were unsure of what to expect when headliner Poppy took the stage.
Would she perform with morphsuit dancers? Would she be singing pop music? What about Titanic Sinclair, Charlotte or her other internet friends? Would they once more show up on stage as they did during her last tour?
All of the buzz was quickly replaced by screams of excitement as the lights dimmed and Poppy took the stage.
Wearing a medieval inspired white corset and matching tights, the singer was joined onstage by a drummer, guitarist and bassist- all of whom were wearing identical bobbed white wigs, black Poppy overalls, and white face paint with over exaggerated pink blush, blue eyeshadow and red lipstick.
Taking hold of her own guitar, Poppy took the mic and launched into her latest album’s title track and lead single, “Am I A Girl?”
With a crowd full of Poppy impersonators and Poppy VIPs wearing embossed “P” white robes, everyone on the floor was singing and dancing along as the singer transitioned into songs “Chic Chick,” “Money,” and “Bleach Blonde Baby.”
But the crowd went especially crazy when the beat for “My Style,” started.
It was after this song, which features lyrics about Poppy starting a cult and breaking necks, that the infamous “Poppy Beverage” was taken out and passed around to the crowd.
“Raise your hand if you trust Poppy with your life. The Poppy beverage is delicious. Will you drink the delicious beverage?” the singer asked fans as her and her band handed out plastic cups full of a red liquid and the screen flashed images of a skull and crossbones.
The contents of the drink are unknown, but that did not stop most of the front row from participating in the ritual and continuing on with the show as the band launched into computer loving anthem “Computer Boy.”
Then, Poppy and her band performed “Immature Couture,” a B-side from “Am I A Girl?” that is all about being true to yourself and loving who you are.
“Cause you were made to be great so you don’t need to hide” she sang, as the crowd bopped along to the beat.
It was after this that the singer and bandmates took a brief break, with their backing screen playing the music video for unofficial single “Voicemail,” in the background.
The band then reemerged to play a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall,” before continuing on with Poppy’s singles “Interweb,” and “Time is Up.”
As the night began to wind down, Poppy made sure to check in on her fans.
“Is this the best concert you’ve ever been to?” she asked before being answered with an eruption of screams and applause.
Poppy then ended her set with performances of her first ever single “Everybody Wants to be Poppy” and 2017s “Microphone,” before performing an encore composed of “Play Destroy” “Dream” (a cover of The Cranberries hit song) and her genre bending “X.”
