Juliet Simms is making her 2020 musical debut with the release of her brand new EP Descent.

Released as her first full collection under her collaboration with Sumerian Records- Descent showcases a new side to Simms, taking a step away from her country inspired tunes of the past and stepping fully into the alternative rock spotlight. With a slight country tinge to stay true to her roots.

Opening on the hearty “All American,” Descent starts off by sending a potent message to Simms’ haters- many of whom have spent years on social media attacking the singer for her appearance, musical abilities, and every other topic under the sun.

Through lyrics about fighting back and battling the growing monster that is social media, Simms relays her desire to escape the world and just be free. Free of critics, free of self doubt, and free of wishing she could be free.

And with a new music video that visually showcases the singer’s struggles with haters and her fight to silence them- she plays up the idea of an “All American Girl,” by defying society’s rules and living as her authentic self.

Following the opening track is “You’re Gonna Lose The Best Thing In Your Life” which showcases Simms’ grit and adds a bit of a harder rock groove to her musical catalogue.

A song about trying to navigate a relationship that is uncertain- “You’re Gonna Lose The best Thing In Your Life” is all about the push and pull that occurs when you’re trying to decide if your relationship is worth holding onto when the other party begins to withdraw.

Holding no punches or inner thoughts back, Simms shares her insecurities about being so deeply dependent on her partner and ponders her worth- only to determine she is the best thing they’ve ever had and it would be a shame for them to let her go.

Closing the three song EP on “Real Bad Things,” which is the ‘heaviest’ of the release- Simms begins to reclaim her identity and her narrative.

Using a hip-hop fused with rock inspired beat along with repetitive but powerful lyrics, Simms calls out the difficulties she’s experienced in life that have made her colder and made it difficult to want to fight her internal and external demons.

But through reminding herself that she can’t give into the “bad things,” and that those around her want her to continue on she begins to change her tone- reminding listeners that “this is [her] time.”

Closing as a perfect reminder for anyone struggling with the difficulties of 2020- Simms lets fans know that this is not the time to give up, but to instead fight back.

In all, Descent showcases Simms ability to reinvent herself and create a brand new sonic profile that shows off her maturity and talent. She is no longer just an act from Warped Tour, Andy Black’s wife or a contestant on The Voice- she is Juliet Simms and she’s going to make sure everyone knows her name and her range.
