Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun’s talents are not solely reserved for the recording booth, and to prove it, the duo have teamed up for their directorial and screenwriting debut with their new film “Downfalls High.”
A combination of scripted scenes and alternative music videos set to the sounds of Kelly’s latest album Tickets to My Downfall, “Downfalls High” follows the life of Fenix James, a misunderstood teen who is just trying to survive high school. But what seems to be a dreary life he is just stumbling through to reach graduation is suddenly brightened up when he meets Scarlett- the popular girl who sees Fenix as someone special, rather than an outcast.
With sound design curated by Mod Sun, and music performed by Kelly (as well has his close friends and collaborators Travis Barker, Trippie Redd, blackbear, and iann dior) the film then takes viewers on a journey as the teens fall in love and Fenix fulfills his musical ambitions. But with foreshadowing throughout the film giving the audience glimpses at what becomes a tragic ending, the love story is cut short by some unexpected plot twists. But you’ll have to watch them to find out just what happens.
Starring Chase Hudson and Sydney Sweeney, “Downfalls High” was filmed in Los Angeles over the course of four days this past year.
Inspired by multi-year visions thought up by both Mod Sun and Kelly, who is credited by his full name Colson Baker, the film perfectly encapsulates alternative culture, battles with mental health, and the idea of music uniting people of varying backgrounds.
Putting a hyper focus on creativity and not sticking to any rules- both musically and relating to production, the film is purely an experiment gone right and serves as a reminder to all creative dreamers that there truly is nothing you can’t do without a bit of ambition and the help of some friends.
