Occasionally in life you encounter people you can never fully please. This could apply to a friend, a romantic partner, even in some cases family members- all people that you ultimately seek approval from and despite your best efforts, never fully seem to be able to satisfy.
In these situations, it is easy to let yourself become bogged down with the idea that something is wrong with you, or that you must be doing something wrong. Your mind becomes filled with ideas about needing to change, or make yourself smaller so that this person can take the lead- often not realizing how much of a toll this takes on your own mental and sometimes physical health.
And eventually, no matter how hard you have worked or changed yourself, or how much effort you have put into a situation where mutual compromise is non existant, there will be a point where you find yourself hitting a wall asking “what do they want from me if this still isn’t it?”
For alternative duo Moonlight Social, the culmination of a stressful year and this feeling/a desire to reclaim their importance in spite of these types of people inspired the release of their new single, aptly titled “What Do You Want From Me?”
Released January 29th, “What Do You Want From Me?” is a punk pop meets alt rock inspired anthem that navigates the process of leaving a toxic relationship or situation while simultaneously accepting that some people can never be pleased.
Calling out all of the lies and inconsistencies within a relationship, the song is a catchy ode to standing up for yourself and stating that enough is enough.
Written last year during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, “What Do You Want From Me?” stemmed from both band members experiencing extremely difficult times- with Jeremy Burchard losing out on a new creative endeavor and Jennica Scott being forced to postpone her wedding, the band felt that there was a need to get out pent up frustrations. And thus the new single was born.
“We wrote this song at one of the lowest points of the year for us, personally. We both tested positive for COVID-19 and it really upended a lot of things,” the duo shared. “[By the time we reunited] we literally couldn’t think about anything besides finishing this song. It really helped us get through a tough time and we’re just so thankful for it. It’s really been fun to truly embrace who we are creatively, and you can clearly hear how much pop punk has influenced us throughout our years.”
