I was drawing at my desk on August 4 before everything in my life quite literally turned upside down. Within the span of a second, Beirut was riddled with what came to be coined as the third largest explosion the world has seen. Countless lives were changed forever, the city unrecognizable, as debris and sirens filled in the silence of a country gripping for air.
A part of Beirut died that day. Two months after the events, the city is still struggling to maintain any stronghold on a life that now seems an eternity away. From October 2019 to October 2020, Beirut has been a site of revolution, political instability, pandemics, economic collapse, and one of the greatest crimes against humanity to top it all off. The amount of aid and help Beirut still needs is astronomical, and luckily organizations like Music for Beirut are seeing that it happens.
Beirut is a bountiful and beautiful home of so much art. Music exists at the heart of the city and has consistently been a beacon of hope that comes alongside all the catastrophe. With their virtual benefit concert, Music for Beirut and NOISEY are keeping that beacon alive by raising funds for one of Beirut’s most important hospitals, the Children’s Cancer Center.
The virtual fundraiser will take place on October 11 at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET on NOISEY’s YouTube channel, with a diverse lineup of artists from all genres and backgrounds.
Though the live stream will be free to watch, viewers will be encouraged throughout to donate to Music for Beirut via their website. All proceeds will go to the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL), a leading facility in treating young cancer patients, that has unfortunately been severely damaged from both the blast’s aftermath and the country’s financial crisis.
Beirut needs help, and attending a virtual concert with great music is one of the simplest ways to make it happen. We hope to see you there.
If you are interested in donating, please visit Music For Beirut, here, and be sure to tune in on Sunday at: https://www.youtube.com/Noisey.
