The internet can be a wondrous place.
With all of the information we could ever need at our fingertips, new methods of communication popping up every few years, and countless trending apps that keep us glued to our phones- technology is very plainly both a blessing and a curse. Allowing us to now be more connected to each other than ever- it also sets us up for over exposure.
But in an age where nearly every aspect of our lives are online- especially after surviving a year and a half long global pandemic that has put a halt on most in-person communication, its hard to NOT want to over share on the internet. After all, you can make long lasting friendships, find a sense of community, and even potentially find love.
And it is this side of the internet’s power and the urge to find a sense of belonging that inspired up and coming songwriter Near Tears’ new single “Love Under Surveillance.”
A track that sonically feels nostalgic, having an electro-rock feel that is reminiscent of some 80s hits (think “Kids in America” by Kim Wilde), “Love Under Surveillance” is an exploration of being young and in love in an internet age. Examining what intimacy looks like on a world wide web-scape, as well as a general fascination with technology, the track is both a catchy anthem and an introspective look at modern society.
And as the second track to be released from Near Tears’ (also known as Justine Dorsey) upcoming EP, Get With The Program (October 22) the single continues to set the tone for future releases and give fans a glimpse into the singer’s songwriting style.
“Love Under Surveillance” is about falling in love on the internet. Lovers surveil each other. You can google your new crush’s name and find out everything about them – their Linkedin profile, their Letterboxd account!” Near Tears shares.
“And of course every move you make on your phone (planning dates, sending nudes, declarations of love and affection) is being monitored by Big Brother. Do algorithms feel that affection too? Can they fall in love with you?”
Both leaving us wondering about our own romantic entanglements and data sharing and leaving us pressing repeat over and over, we cannot wait to hear more Near Tears.
You can stream “Love Under Surveillance” out now, and keep an eye out for the new EP, Get With The Program, out October 22nd.
