Good evening, everyone!
It is once more New Music Friday which means that the week has once again come to a close and we are blessed with some brand new music to help us kick off the weekend in the best way possible.
With new singles from Haunter, Pinkshift, Brye and so many more rising artists we are so excited to share some of our favorite new October singles with you.
You can check out our favorite picks of the week below, and as always check out our Spotify playlist (linked at the bottom) for our full list of October favorites.
An anthem dedicated to a longing for human connection, “Could I” is the latest single by indie rock band The Zangwills and perhaps the most relatable single of the year thus far.
A self described “scruffy serenade,” “Could I” follows the path of narrator hoping to reunite with a loved one. With the first verse taking the listener through the phase of intense longing followed by the chorus that explodes with relief once the narrator recounts reuniting with their love, the track perfectly represents the feelings nearly everyone has experienced this past year with forced social distancing and COVID guidelines. Especially for those who are in long distance relationships.
With rocking guitar verses, a punchy percussion line and attention grabbing lyrics, “Could I” is easily one of our favorite releases of the week and the best way to kick off your post-work Friday afternoon as you begin to plan all of your future reunions (as soon as they are allowed.)
Haunter are going to become the next big alt-pop act, and we are so ready to join them for the ride. Especially if it features new songs as great as today’s new release “Risk It All.”
A carefree anthem dedicated to living your life to the fullest and following your hearts desires, “Risk It All” is a track that helps us feel free and invincible.
With a mix of electronic and live instruments giving the track an added dreamy feel and vocals that captivate you at first listen, Haunter both encapsulate what it means to be an alt pop artist while also breaking the mold and not following any one set of sonic guidelines.
And as the band’s third original track to hit streaming services, “Risk It All” has us feeling pretty good about the future of Haunter and we cannot wait to see what they do next.
“Toro” and “Rainwalk” by Pinkshift
A band that has exploded into the alternative scene over the past few months, Pinkshift are yet another artist you do not want to miss out on.
First landing on our radar with their single “i’m gonna tell my therapist on you” earlier this summer, Pinkshift are now back with a double single that you will want to have on repeat all afternoon.
“Rainwalk,” which was announced to fans earlier this month, and the surprise release “Toro” both further showcase the band’s ability to be a hard hitting pop punk band that isn’t afraid of breaking the supposed “rules.”
And as a song about the angst and annoyance that comes with being ignored by someone you know but can’t read, “Rainwalk” perfectly masters the ability to be emotional and get your point across. A biting track that will have you scream singing along on the first listen through.
“Stealing from My Youth” by Kayla Williams
Inspired by the pandemic essentially putting a halt on life’s normal activities and causing everyone to basically lose a year of their lives to the uncertainty that comes with our new realities, “Stealing from My Youth” is a groovy new track that helps put our global feelings into words.
“I wrote this song in the midst of the chaos when we were mostly housebound,” singer Kayla Williams shared. “In many ways, not being able to live life ‘normally’ felt like there were days being taken from me, like the pandemic was stealing from my youth.”
With the use of brass instrumentals and a catchy percussion beat throughout the song, “Stealing from My Youth” helps listeners feel less alone with their current struggles while also reminding them that life won’t always feel this upside down. You just have to remember that things will get better and you will be okay- it just takes some time.
The perfect track to put on and get into the Halloween spirit to, “Witch of LA” is the newest single by LA based Colombian singer/songwriter Camie Llano.
A pop anthem about channeling your inner “witchy” powers and getting everyone around you to realize how powerful (read: connected) you truly are, this single is a certified bop.
With a very catchy underlying beat and lyrics that are easy to pick up before your first listen even ends, “Witch of LA” is just a genuinely fun song. Even if you yourself aren’t a witch (or in LA) something about it grabs onto your brain and makes you dance along imagining yourself as a higher power. A perfect spooky time mood.
Brye’s music blew up earlier this year after her song “Lemons” dominated social media platform TikTok, and now her latest single “Letter to Blueberry” has helped to further solidify the young songwriter as one to watch.
An emotional ballad about a relationship that has turned sour, “Letter to Blueberry” is a breakup anthem dedicated to couples who have grown apart and separated in a hurtful blowout, despite their closeness prior.
Written as an apology of sorts for past behavior, the track features heartbreaking lyrics such as “All I want is my best friend back,” and “please say sorry for me to your mom,” echoing the idea that this breakup was not an easy one and that despite the two years that have passed, the emotions are still as potent as ever.
Perfect for allowing yourself to sink into your emotions, this song is not one that will help you cheer up, but it is one you need to listen to- if only once.
“Right Here With Me” by Octopus Montage
A single about the battle of maintaining a healthy long distance relationship, “Right Here With Me,” is a somber self-described “pop-punk ballad” by rising pop-punk band Octopus Montage.
With classic pop-punk vocal styling and a mix of ballad-esque piano verses combined with full band riffs, “Right Here With Me” is a final goodbye kiss for a relationship that has fallen apart due to the stress that comes with being miles apart.
Honing in on the difficulty of saying goodbye while also wishing their former partner the best as they separate, the single is an honest but heartbreaking documentation of choosing to uncouple despite nothing major happening to break you apart.
Of the single, the band shared that they hope it resonates with fans and helps further push their goals of not shying away from difficult subject matter. “We aren’t afraid to speak about our opinions on tough subjects and [“Right Here With Me”] continues the narrative of our sticking it to the man approach.”
“Teardrops” by Bring Me The Horizon
Genre defiers Bring Me The Horizon made waves earlier this week when they announced their upcoming album Post Human: Survival Horror. And now, just one week from the album’s debut, the band are giving fans another look into the album with their new single “Teardrops.”
A dark alternative rock song, “Teardrops” navigates feelings of hopelessness and an internal struggle with mental illness- specifically depression and suicidal ideation. Holding nothing back lyrically, the track acts as an outlet for band members and listeners alike with an intensity that makes it perfect for venting any pent up frustrations you may have.
Sampling a mix of the band’s newer alternative sounds and a touch of their darker metal core roots, the song continues the pattern of new singles that feel both refreshing and timeless in a way that only BMTH can accomplish, and has us so excited to hear the rest of the album next week.
“Weight of the World” by Valencia
An alt pop song that will get you on your feet, “Weight of the World” is the latest single and music video by Philadelphia based Valencia.
A pop-rock act who are celebrating the ten year anniversary of their album Dancing With A Ghost this past week, Valencia treated fans this morning with a deluxe edition of their classic album, featuring a few b-sides including the previously unreleased “Weight of the World.”
Navigating the pressures that come with existing as a human in a world full of stressors and anxiety, the single (though written years before) perfectly encapsulates the overwhelming state of the world right now as people are reevaluating their life paths, careers and general existence unexpectedly as the pandemic has taken over.
And though the lyrical content is highly relatable, the track also catches listeners’ attentions with groovy baselines and well mixed instrumentals that will have you bopping along almost instantly.
A song about nostalgia and trying to break out of living in the past instead of living in the moment, “On and On” is the latest single by pop rock band A Story Told.
The newest song off of their upcoming album, “On and On” is a groovy look back at some of life’s best moments while also realizing that life is passing you by as you get caught up reliving in your memories.
With smooth vocals, a dreamy electronic flair and a few key references to influential music artists, the song is the perfect one to reminisce to before mentally making note to appreciate what you have now, instead of just what you had in the past.
The future is always unpredictable, but you can’t make new favorite memories without sometimes letting go of your inhibitions and allowing yourself to be free.
You can stream all of the above tracks now wherever you stream music, and be sure to check out our full October playlist featuring all of our favorite releases from the past four weeks, linked below.
