It is officially August, which means that we are now in a brand new month full of hot new releases.

And though we are only seven days into the month, this past week was off to a great start, with tons of new singles for us to jam out to.

Check out all of our favorite new singles of the week below, and if you enjoy what you hear, check out our full 2020 playlist- with all of our favorite songs of the year- linked below.

One in a Million” – Running Lights

Kicking off this week’s New Music Friday is Running Lights, with their new single “One in a Million.”

An up-beat pop track infused with electronic beats, “One in a Million” is the perfect track for a hot summer day surrounded by people you love (wearing masks and standing six feet apart, of course).

With a catchy repetitive rhythm leading up to a beat drop ahead of the chorus and lyrics about falling in love, this song is both a great song to dance to and one to listen to as you drive along the coast. It has the perfect lightness that every good summertime song needs, along with positive lyricism and danceable beats, leaving listeners feeling good and smiling their way into a new summertime romance.

“Leave Me Alone” – I Don’t know How But They Found Me

I Don’t Know How But They Found Me are back and as snarky as ever with their brand new single “Leave Me Alone.”

The band that made waves with their debut EP “1981 Extended Play” in 2018 have blessed fans yet again this past week with both their new single and the announcement of their debut album “Razzmatazz,” which will hit streaming platforms October 18th.

And while both members of the band- Dallon Weekes and Ryan Seaman- come from a history of indie rock and pop influenced bands, IDKHow switch things up by perfectly executing 80s inspired, synth-filled rock music- which keeps them standing out against other up-and-coming bands. Their new single being no different.

With biting lyrics, electronic beats, and a backing track that will have you dancing in your seat, this song is a perfect set up for the future of IDKHow

“Spell” – Kandle

Kandle first landed on our radar a few weeks ago with her single “Better Man,” and has now once more caught our ears with her new single “Spell” from her July 31st EP, “Stick Around and Find Out.”

The latest single to be featured off of “Stick Around and Find Out,” “Spell” features similar themes to “Better Man,” presumably telling the story of Kandle’s early career, where she found herself being taken advantage of and signed into deals that did not help her career in the ways promised.

With 50s inspired beats, punchy brass instruments and catchy choruses singing “S-P-E-L-L,” this track is easily one of our favorites off of the EP. It is both fun and up-beat while also tackling the topic of toxic relationships- perfectly mastered and a great way to open up this collection of songs.

And while the whole album is impressive on its own, it is even more incredible knowing it was recorded while the singer/songwriter battled homelessness and legal struggles. Now that Kandle is free from her past and getting back on her feet, her career is back on the rise and we cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

You can stream “Stick Around and Find Out” in full now, here.

“Sorry” – beabadoobee

Released Wednesday, “Sorry” is the latest track by London based sensation, beabadoobee.

A somber track both lyrically and tone wise, “Sorry” features a mix of grunge inspired rock instrumentals overlaid by Bea’s unique vocal styling and lyrics about the loss of a friendship- a personal story to the singer, who dedicated the track to an old friend.

“[“Sorry” is my way of] confessing my mistakes in a friendship and watching someone who I love break down and fade away as a person,” the singer shared. “It’s the idea of dismissing something because it felt too close to home and a personal reminder to never take for granted what that person could have had.”

“Sorry” is the second single off of Bea’s upcoming album “Fake It Flowers,” which is set to debut October 16th. You can stream both “Sorry” and her previous single “Care,” out now.

“IDKATL” – Stay Over

In the words of mental health non-profit Hope For A Day, “it’s okay to not be okay,” and that is exactly what Stay Over’s new song helps remind us.

An upbeat alt-rock song with a catchy percussion backing, “IDKATL” is the latest single from Stay Over, a rising alt rock star who uses his music to spread awareness about life’s toughest issues- including his own struggles with mental health, which are white inspired today’s song.

Through his new single and video, which dropped earlier this week, the LA based singer/songwriter reminds listeners that mental health struggles don’t make them any less worthy of getting help and that though alcohol and substances may be what helps them get through the day-to-day, talking to somebody and letting out your inner feelings can be incredibly helpful on your journey to self love and self care.

And in addition to being a perfect message for the current state of the world, Stay Over doesn’t deliver his messages in a somber or depressing way- letting fans groove along to the very danceable “IDKATL” all while marinating with the track’s lyrics- letting them truly sink into their hearts and minds.

“Runaway” – Emi Jeen

Inspired by her desire to pack everything up and start over, “Runaway” is the latest single by Canadian singer/songwriter Emi Jeen.

An EDM influenced pop track, “Runway” features a catchy percussion beat with dream-like synths that help amplify the track’s idealization of running away- starting anew in a new place where nobody knows you or your past struggles.

And while this is a feeling we can all relate to- especially with the current socio-political climate and COVID-19 putting life on hold for the time being, the track was written by Jeen after a writing session in LA nearly two years ago, after battling within the music industry for 10 years left her wondering whether she wanted to just start fresh somewhere new.

“It’s okay to start all over again and to take risks,” Jeen shared. “I hope “Runaway” serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to change things around and move on and take a different path.”

“Closer” – Scenic Route to Alaska

If you have followed our NMF playlists for a while, you will know that almost every week we feature one song that was released well before the rest of the tunes- always a song that has somehow slipped through our radar. This week, that song is “Closer” by Scenic Route to Alaska.

For fans of The Beatles, Panic! At The Disco’s “Pretty. Odd.” or The Young Veins, this track is one of the stand outs of this week’s roundup- even though it was released over two weeks ago.

A love song at it’s core, “Closer” is a feel good track that features indie-rock sounds accompanied by 60s inspired vocal styling and groove; serving as the latest track by Edmonton trio Scenic Route to Alaska, and the second single off of their upcoming album “Time For Yourself.”

With an optimism and sense of romance flowing through the track’s lyrics, “Closer” features a perfect mix of unique vocals and nostalgic instrumentals that will have you hitting repeat every time it ends- never getting bored of the happy-go-lucky feelings the song emits.
