Indie rock artist Fox Violet is not going to let 2020 keep them from creating new music.

After releasing three new singles over the course of the year, including the most recent single “Not Another Memory,” earlier this summer, Fox Violet is ramping up for the release of their upcoming EP and giving us an inside scoop on what to expect from their new music.

You can read our full interview with Fox Violet where we discuss all things 2020, hopes for the new year, and more below, and be sure to check out their latest singles now- linked at the bottom.

Second Society Report: How are you holding up during this insane year that is 2020? Hopefully your friends and families are staying safe and healthy!

Fox Violet: Thank you for asking! I have been doing as well as can be. It’s definitely a tough time for everyone and for the music industry specifically. I am actually writing a new EP though so I’m happy about that.

SSR: Did you have any big releases or tours that were put on hold because of the pandemic? How has that affected the project? (could be personally, financially, morale wise, etc.)

FV: No big tours, but I was planning on doing select show dates in other cities (NYC) that I sadly had to postpone. It’s definitely a struggle. I love to connect with people at shows and feel sad that this is permanently on hold right now. It’s hard to find purpose, but all you can really do is keep going, and give yourself time to heal if you need.

SSR: How have you been spending your newfound “downtime” while the world has been essentially shut down?

FV: I started writing a new EP! I’m not going to lie, this was very hard to do so at the start, and also my motivation truly is up and down, but that’s been my main focus right now when I’m not just trying to stay fit and healthy, but I find woking on a new EP is really helping my mental health.

SSR: Have you picked up any new hobbies while quarantining that you’d like to share?

FV: I tried having a garden in my apartment! That sadly did not work out! I have an urge to try painting. Mostly I have been working on my production skills in music.

SSR: Have you worked on any new releases during this time? Any that are already out or that we can get a sneak peak of?

FV: My date for release is October 30th for the next single. I have been really excited about the new material I’m creating. I think it is a more defined cohesive sound and really deepens my perspective on the world and relationships during this time.

SSR: If already out- what was the inspiration for the release? Have you written any songs specifically about the state of the world right now?

FV: My latest release “Not Another Memory” was a song all about trying to distinguish between fantasy and reality, understanding your memories and taking control over your inner emotional/mental and spiritual turmoil. It’s unexpected but a lot of my prior songs reflect on a world in upheaval.

There is always a lot of questioning in my lyrics and I like to adopt a macro/micro perspective which looks at how our relationship with ourself is in fact a reflection on our relationship with the world around us. That how we act in our society and the hurt that we cause and in turn experience is all inter-connected.

I have never felt as strongly as I do now that the world is hurting. Even though my lyrics are examining the melancholy aspect of this from my perspective, I want the instrumentation, the tones and the texture in the music to transport you into a dream existence outside of yourself. I want the music to be transformative and maybe one day transcendental. I think we need music that doesn’t shy away from truth telling but that also is cathartic. I really have this as my ultimate aim, and calling, and it directs my understanding of art making.

SSR: How has it been being an artist in a time when you cannot tour? How have you been working to promote your music and expand your reach?

FV: I’ve got to say it has been hard. My mind has been elsewhere and also you need to be mindful of what other people may be going through, but I have done a few live streams and I’m excited to look at how I can delve more into virtual concerts in the future from venues or spaces that are designed for this purpose.

SSR: Do you have any words of advice for fans that are feeling particularly bummed out about the live music world coming to a halt?

FV: I think, try to find new people too co-write with. I’ve done that and this truly connects you with your peers and your community. This helps so much and keeps things light. I do recommend going back to basics picking up one instrument and just letting yourself wander without any kind of real aim.. you might come up with something amazing.

SSR: When the world returns to a safer spot and we are able to (hopefully) attend live shows again- say in 2021- what do you hope to achieve?

FV: I would love to jump back into doing bigger shows and touring, and work with a record label that truly connects hopefully with what I’m doing. I’m planning a bunch of short films that serve as music videos too, when its’s safe to shoot.

SSR: Is there anything you wish your fans would know about you or about the current state of the music world?

FV: I’m here! Community is everything right now so feel free to reach out and connect on instagram at www.instagram.com/fox_violets This project is all about those on the sidelines and I really hope we can connect in future.
