After bursting onto the scene in 2014, five piece metalcore band Horror Dance Squad have more than proved their musical talents.

With one full length album under their belt with 2017’s “Leap” in addition to several singles- including five new tracks this year as they gear up for their sophomore album, the Estonia based quintet are ready to make 2020 the best year of their careers.

We were fortunate enough to chat with HDS for the latest edition of our quarantine questionnaire about their newest singles, get the inside scoop on their upcoming album and find out what they have been doing to pass the time.

You can read our full interview below, and be sure to connect with the band via their social media accounts, linked at the bottom.

Second Society Report: How are you holding up during this insane year that is 2020? Hopefully your friends and families are staying safe and healthy!

Horror Dance Squad: Thank you! Same to you! We are doing the best we can during these trying times and, fortunately, our families and we are all doing well.

SSR: Did you have any big releases or tours that were put on hold because of the pandemic? How has that affected the band? (could be personally, financially, morale wise, etc.)

HDS: We have had to cancel a few shows we were very excited to play, but fortunately, the situation in Estonia was safe enough to allow some of the summer festivals to continue and we were lucky to get to play two very fun shows during the summer. At the same time, we are about to release our new album, No Flag Will Fly Forever (25 September), and we have kept ourselves busy with releasing and promoting the new singles, filming music videos and spreading the word about our new stuff.

SSR: How have you been spending your newfound “downtime” while the world has been essentially shut down?

HDS: To be honest, we haven’t really had any downtime. We’ve been keeping busy with promoting the album. This is actually the hardest we have ever worked. And we love it.

SSR: Have you picked up any new hobbies while quarantining that you’d like to share?

HDS: Well, we successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign on Estonia’s own Hooandja, so in a way we picked up fundraising as a hobby.

SSR: Have you worked on any new releases during this time? Any that are already out or that we can get a sneak peak of?

HDS: You can check out all of our new releases on any of the major streaming platforms. And watch the videos on YouTube!

SSR: Have you written any songs specifically about the state of the world right now?

HDS: [Our upcoming album] No Flag Will Fly Forever is completely about the state of the world right now. Even though we began writing it two years ago, it feels extremely relevant for what we are all going through these days. From global warming to racism to the apparent apathy of the governing class, each song expresses our frustrations towards the injustice we see around us. But we really try to leave our listeners with a sense of hope through it all.

SSR: How has it been being an artist in a time when you cannot tour? How have you been working to promote your music and expand your reach?

HDS: At the beginning of the quarantine, we live-streamed a concert from a local studio. That was a very fun and interesting new experience for us. It is quite difficult to put on a concert without an audience in front of you. Otherwise, we have been using this time to make exciting videos and speak to outlets like you guys to let everyone know that we’ve got a super exciting album coming out on the 25th!

SSR: Do you have any words of advice for fans that are feeling particularly bummed out about the live music world coming to a halt?

HDS: We have been very lucky here in Estonia that, although restrictions have certainly been put in place, live music is still alive here in some capacity. And we don’t believe it will every come grinding completely to a halt. We will always find a way to perform.

SSR: When the world returns to a safer spot and we are able to (hopefully) attend live shows again- say in 2021- what do you hope to achieve?

HDS: To tour the hell out of our album!

SSR: Is there anything you wish your fans would know about you or about the current state of the music world?

HDS: Music brings us together even if we have to stay a little bit apart. We hope that you can find a message in one of our songs that will help you feel understood and less alone during these trying times.
