If the past year has taught us anything, it is the curse that is overthinking and the wandering thoughts that can come with free time, lingering feelings and unanswered questions.

Sometimes, these long periods of overthinking can lead us retracing the steps of our past, wondering how life could have played out differently if we had just followed an alternate path. And it’s this feeling that has inspired rising pop singer Rella’s new single, “Maryland.”

The singer’s third single since her debut in 2019, “Maryland” is a romantic pop anthem about love and loss.

Lyrically exploring a relationship that has fallen apart and the regrets that the narrator faces as they ponder what they could have done differently to salvage their love, the singer carefully navigates the topic of addiction and how that can negatively impact both romantic and platonic relationships.

“While I don’t personally struggle with substance abuse issues, much of my family does, and I see and relate to that chaos in myself,” Rella shares. “This song to me is an exploration of whether looking back on a relationship fondly actually signifies that relationship’s quality, or whether I just romanticize the past for romance’s sake, especially when it’s chaotic.”

“The details of the story are pretty much fictional, but I do constantly wonder whether I could change the ending of any of my failed past relationships just by showing up and saying my peace, like the big romantic speech at the end of a movie.”
