In honor of the upcoming one-year anniversary release of “Lose You to Love Me,” Selena Gomez surprised fans by sharing the highly requested demo version.  “Lose You to Love Me” was Selena’s first song to top the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and the first song released from her album Rare.

In addition to the new release, Gomez also announced that “Lose You to Love Me” had reached double platinum status by posting a photo of herself holding a commemorative plaque. “Lose You To Love Me” was co-written with Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and FINNEAS.

Lose You to Love Me not only conveyed all of the feelings Gomez had been wanting to share with her fans at the time, but it also helped set the tone of the new era of her music. With the release of the demo version, fans were treated to the initial style and vibe of what the song could have been.

Overall, there are not any drastic differences between the demo and final versions. In terms of the most significant, it would have to be the endings. In the final version, Gomez ends the song off with the lines “And now the chapter is closed and done. And now it’s goodbye, it’s goodbye for us.” In the demo version, Gomez’s part happens earlier and the chorus ends the song repeating “to love love you, to love love you, to love you.”

The demo version also highlights some of the early vocal/style choices Gomez made early on. For example, the breath she takes right before the start of the song and the “yeah” after the line “I saw the signs and I ignored it.” The piano in the background takes more of a back seat in this version and Gomez’s vocal tone, particularly in the climax, is much more subtle and subdued compared to the final version. It’s definitely interesting to hear the song from this perspective and to be able to compare it to the final version.

Fans were extremely happy with the demo’s release on social media, particularly highlighting Gomez’s vocal strength. Many also reiterated the strength of the lyrics and of the story the song tells.

Gomez has several new projects in the works, including co-starring and executive producing the Hulu comedy series, Only Murders in the Building. Her cooking show on HBO Max, Selena + Chef, was also renewed for a second season. She is also returning as Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 4, set to release in 2021 and it was also recently announced that she would serve as an executive producer on the film. Rare Beauty also teased an upcoming eye shadow palette on social media, set to release on October 9th.
