After five long years, Fall Out Boy have finally blessed us with a brand new album- and it is everything we dreamed of and more.
Titled So Much For Stardust, the 13 track album features a mix of musical inspiration. From the 2000s punk rock sound that got the band their start to 80s funk and big band horns- the highly anticipated release takes listeners out of their headphones and directly into the creative minds of the Chicago natives.
Opening with the previously released and highly regarded singles “Love From The Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good,” the band ‘ease’ listeners into their new era with a loaded punch. Moving away from their experimental pop meets electronic sound of 2018’s M A N I A, the latest release brings fans back to their emo loving roots ala From Under The Corktree or even Save Rock and Roll.
There is no question when these tracks end that this IS a Fall Out Boy album, and it’s bound to be regarded as one of the greats.
This is then further confirmed by subsequent tracks such as “Hold Me Like A Grudge,” “Fake Out,” and “So Good Right Now,” (which samples Bobby Day’s iconic hit “Itty Bitty Pretty One”) all of which will have you turning your volume up and dancing it out in your room.
And though the tracks have musical melodies that keep you on your feet, that does not mean that the band’s famed lyricist Pete Wentz has lost his touch. Through the happy pop or moody rock vibes you will hear several heart wrenching lyrics such as “Do you laugh about me whenever I leave or do I just need more therapy,” (“Fake Out”), “Tell me when the party ends / Will you still love who I am?” (“Hold Me Like A Grudge), or “Last night I dreamt I still knew you / I carved out a place in this world for two / But it’s empty without you” (“Flu Game”).
But staying true to their pop rock origins and deep cutting lyricism doesn’t mean that the band didn’t experiment on this album. In fact, several tracks stray from their traditional genre and lean more theatrical- with a quick dabble into 80s pop funk and rock opera.
Opening with intense strings and kicking off what sounds like the opening of a blockbuster film, “I Am My Own Muse,” quite fittingly takes the lead as the most theatrical piece on the album, followed closely by the energetic “Flu Game” and the extremely 80s inspired “What A Time To Be Alive.”
But perhaps what makes this album so special is the grand finale- the title track, “So Much For Stardust.”
A track full of angst, classically large Patrick Stump vocals, a fantastic percussion track, and the lyrical drama of a cinematic masterpiece that makes you want to film your own three act drama in your bedroom- this track ties up the entire album together like a beautiful emo ribbon and leaves you dying to hit repeat. It is big, it is bold, and it is Fall Out Boy.
Oh and lastly- for fans who are wondering if you CAN put a new address on this same old loneliness, the answer is yes, and it’s called “Baby Annihilation.”
You can stream So Much For Stardust out now, and be sure to catch Fall Out Boy on their North American tour this summer.
