Spencer Sutherland made waves in Cambridge this weekend as he took the Freaking Out Tour to the Middle East Upstairs Saturday Night.

Joining Sutherland on the road was 19-year-old Justice Carradine, a YouTube and Vine sensation who helped warm up the crowd during his half-hour set.

Shortly after Carradine’s set and a quick set change, the two hundred cap room filled up and Sutherland took the stage.

Opening with his 2018 track “Tell Me,” Sutherland got fan’s swaying to the beat and into the music before launching into full audience participation with his second track, “Freaking Out.”

“I’ve been looking forward to coming to Boston and I’m so excited to be here,” Sutherland told the crowd.

“When I got this tour routed, Boston wasn’t originally on it and I went back and was like ‘hey man I really wanna go to Boston,’” he shared.

“Good choice!” a fan heckled.

“It was a very good choice,” Sutherland laughed.

Sutherland also treated fans to a cover of his collaboration with Hoodie Allen, “Giving Up On Us,” before slowing it down with “It May Sound Strange” and his anti-Hollywood favorite “Leave Me Alone.”

And while fans loved Sutherland’s original tracks, especially considering his tone and falsetto are as spot on in concert as they are on his recordings, the audience ramped up their excitement ten fold when Sutherland covered two of the biggest songs of this past year: “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo and “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer.

“The next song we just played around with during sound check, so I may not have all the words, but you guys sing as loud as you can,” he told the crowd before “Truth Hurts.”

“I’ve been making music for a long time, and I’ve been an opener on a lot of bigger tours where I’ve ended up playing to seven or eight people. Now to see this is a real dream come true,” Sutherland gestured to the near sold out crowd. “This tour has been super life changing. Thank you for choosing to spend your Saturday night here. I love you guys- don’t forget that”

Sutherland then ended his set on  his hit single “Sweater,” which he performed one and a half times, getting the crowd hyped up and screaming the lyrics before he left the stage.
