20 years ago today Illinois natives The Academy Is… launched into their debut era with the release of their album Almost Here.
A ten song, 32 minute listen, Almost Here quickly became a fan favorite following its release. Leaning into the teen angst that was prevalent in pop rock music of the era, the barely 20 year old band members sang about their fears of growing up, becoming sell outs, watching relationships fail, and what they hoped their legacy would be down the line.
And while we can’t comment on how all of their anxieties would play out over the subsequent years of their career, including their 2011 breakup, 2015 reunion tour and 2022’s seemingly permanent reunion- Almost Here has stood the test of time. A time capsule of 2005 alternative music mixed with a relatable conglomeration of universal themes, this album is one to celebrate.
Whether that celebration includes taking a long walk off of the shortest pier you can find or holding your head high, heavy heart- today is the perfect day to break out your black skinny jeans and play songs like “Attention,” “Black Mamba,” “Checkmarks” or “The Phrase That Pays” at full volume.
And The Academy Is…, if you’re listening – we do miss looking up from the floor at your face on a stage in a crowded room, so please stop teasing us and tour again soon.
After all, some things are far too good to go when you let go.
