If you are looking for an artist that fits perfectly in theme with both an indie movie soundtrack and a relaxing weekend at home, look no further than The Vaughns.
Formed in 2014, the indie rock duo made up of Anna Lies and Ryan Kenter have been hard at work creating perfectly crafted tunes that reflect various life circumstances and milestones. And after signing with Equal Vision Records less than a year ago, the duo are now treating fans with their first official EVR release- a brand new EP.
Titled rom-coms + take-out, the new release dropped this morning and showcases the band’s softer side- channeling a relaxed, stripped back indie rock vibe.
“The concept [for the EP was] to simplify our songs, but focus on using different sounds, riffs and instruments to keep them really fascinating,” Lies shares of the release. “We wanted to get to the roots of what makes a good song,”
Kicking off with “Bushwick,” the EP starts off with a tale of uncertainty and change. Telling the story of the quintessential post-breakup haze many of us find ourselves in after a relationship comes to a close, the track examines what it means to feel lost while also allowing room for acceptance. In a cool and almost carefree manner, the song croons “I’m lost but it’s right where I’m supposed to be,” giving listeners a reminder that it’s okay to be unsure of yourself or your future.
The following track, “All Weekend,” then takes listener’s on a different journey- one through a cute, low-key weekend spent indoors with a loved one. Retelling a story of the days pre-pandemic when going out in the city was all the rage but also came coupled with a desire to stay holed up inside for an introvert’s vacation, the track talks about some of the less extravagant nights couples often share. Reminsicing about cheesy rom-coms, takeout food and blanket forts, “All Weekend” gives listeners a warm fuzzy feeling that can only be matched by lighting some candles and snuggling up with a loved one for a good socially distanced weekend indoors.
Closing on the beautifully written released love song “Raina,” which was written as an ode to vocalist Lies’ partner, rom-coms + take-outs leaves listeners feeling a sense of pure comfort in a way that only good music can provide.
