When The Wrecks released their debut album Infinitely Ordinary earlier this year, fans expected that to be the band’s only big release of the year. But in step with the idea of true holiday magic, the band have decided to treat fans once more to another set of new songs- this time in the form of an EP titled Static.
Announced mid November, Static features four brand new tracks that previously were considered for a deluxe edition of their album, before being turned into their own collection.
“We originally wanted to release a deluxe version of our album Infinitely Ordinary, but often times deluxe tracks get snubbed a bit and we didn’t want that to happen to these songs,” frontman Nick Anderson shared. “So we decided to give them their own release, and an opportunity to reach more people.”
Opening on the title track “Static,” the EP begins with an uptempo indie pop track about wanting to have fixed things in a relationship but being unable to due to the “static in [your] head.”
With a groovy bass line that carries the track under a fun synth rhythm, the song gets listeners into a dancing mood while also preparing them for the theme of the subsequent tracks.
The second track “I Hope It’s Cold in New York” then showcases a different side to the band, slowing things down but adding a rock flare and heavy guitar presence.
Telling the story of a fling that ended with their partner becoming engaged to someone else, the song battles the idea of being better off alone and not with someone who doesn’t share your feelings but also longing for one more night together before calling it quits.
Following “I Hope It’s Cold,” is “Good For Nothing,” a snarky but funky track about putting yourself back together after a toxic relationship has come to an end.
Keeping a similar lyrical theme to “Static” and “I Hope It’s Cold,” this song has a unique sonic profile that helps it stand apart from the other tracks on the EP. With an electro-pop fusion matching the band’s classic alternative sound, this song is one of the catchiest on the EP and will leave you feeling ready to move on from whatever stresses are in your life.
Closing the EP out on the softer and emotional ballad “Try To Remember,” the band calls for a loved one to try to remember the happiness that they used to feel and the moments they first fell in love in an effort to drown out the difficulties and hardship that has since been brought into the relationship.
Overall, Static is a perfectly encapsulated four tracks that navigate some of the most common human emotions and relationship struggles. With sounds for four different moods, the EP has something to offer all listeners- making it a fantastic end of the year release.
