This Modern are closing out the year with a perfect 2020 anthem.
Originally released in the Phoenix band’s classic pop rock meets hip hop style, This Modern’s latest single “Next Time Around” got a bit of a revamp this past week as the band took a step back and gave their best shot at an emotionally driven acoustic performance.
Lyrically documenting the process of constantly fighting an uphill battle, “Next Time Around” plays out as a message of hope for the future while also acknowledging the existence of pain in the present. Repeating lyrics such as the chorus “I should have known better than this by now, maybe the next time around,” the track doesn’t shy away from expressing hurt but simultaneously keeps the idea of optimism alive by proposing that things can get better in the future- even if it’s a struggle.
Stripping back the original track’s electronic elements and putting a heavier focus on the piano and acoustic backings, the refreshed acoustic version of the song plays up the pain and general emotions behind the lyrical content. Helping to hone focus to the vocals- the new version adds a darker but simultaneously softer element that makes the track perfect for lonely nights inside during these long winter months.
Truly pulling at listeners’ heart strings, “Next Time Around” is a reminder that you are never alone in feeling your worst or at your lowest, and that despite how isolating the world can feel- things still can get better. It just might take a few more tries.
