Violet Night are ready to rock your world, so you best get ready to listen.
A three piece band consisting of vocalist/guitarist Connor Pohl, keyboardist T.J. Rounthwaite, and drummer Tay Ewart, Violet Night first launched onto the music scene in 2015 with the release of their debut EP “I Hope You’re Well.”
With their debut album “Colours of You” releasing in 2018, the band continued on and gained hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone- with over 70k monthly listeners.
And now, two years and several singles later, the band are ready to release their sophomore album A N T I H E R O E S, which officially dropped this morning.
“With A N T I H E R O E S, we broke the band down into its smallest parts, and wiped the slate clean,” Pohl shared. “We wrote this album with the mindset that it was our very first record, and there was no preconceived notion or expectation of what we were supposed to sound like.”
The new album features nine tracks, including the four previously released singles “freak me up,” “evergreen,” “hate me,” and “(if) you are the ocean (then) i would like to drown.”
Opening the album on the lyric “hello again my friends, welcome to the show,” during the song “stay golden; we’re all the same in the dark,” A N T I H E R O E S starts off relaxed. With soft vocals coupled with gentle strumming and percussion that keeps a steady beat going, the opening song is a perfect introduction to the album’s upcoming tracks.
Taking listeners on a sonic journey from the first verse through the last notes, the band continues on with the four already released singles. Beginning with the similarly soft spoken “evergreen,” which takes off during the chorus, the second track gives fans the first glimpses at the band’s indie rock side- before breaking into the angsty and punk heavy sounds of “hate me” and “(if) you are the ocean.”
As for the subsequent new tracks, the band begins by slowing things back down with the emotional acoustic ballad “superbloom.” Featuring lyrics such as “I’m not who you think I am, I’m just who you’re breathing every now and again,” and “I’m so sick and tired of feeling this way / I’m so disposable,” this track will break your heart but also draw you in and make you want to listen on repeat. It captures your attention as a complete 180 from the vibes of “(if) you are the ocean,” but feels so perfectly nestled and unique to Violet Night that it doesn’t feel out of place, and helps perfectly set the stage for the next track, “glow.”
A seeming love song that will help lift listener’s spirits, “glow” begins beautifully with a mix of keyboard and percussion leading into the vocals and acoustic strumming that will subsequently drive the track. With the opening lyric “your eyes are shooting stars and I’m the Milky Way,” “glow” starts off romantically- comparing a school romance to “true love,” before it comes to an end during the final verses. Very reminiscent of pop fused indie rock sounds, famed by bands as The 1975 or Wallows, this track is easily going to become one of the most streamed off of the album- both for it’s catchy and beautiful instrumentals and the honest lyrics that will have anyone who’s ever been heartbroken singing along as the reminisce on their past.
But despite the somber feelings both “superbloom” and “glow,” give off, the next track will help get you back in the groove and ready to move. “wallflower (none of this means anything)” picks the beat up with very catchy pop-punk inspired guitar and vocals, and a drum line that will have you dying to hop in a pit and start dancing. And though the track is not the happy-go-lucky song you may want to help get you back on track after re-living your recent heartbreaks, “wallflower” is somehow exactly the track you need to hear next and will have you feeling pumped up and ready to forget all of your problems because after all, “none of this means anything.”
But don’t get too hyped, because the final track on the album will have you feeling a bit less- well, dance-y.
Closing out on the title track “A N T I H E R O E S,” which is also the only title spelled with any capital letters, the album ends in a similar somber note as the mid-album tracks. Completely ending on the lyric “I’m begging you to stay,” this song confronts life and death, love and loss, and the fear of being alone. It sums up all of the themes of the previous songs without feeling repetitive or overbearing. It is a track that perfectly encapsulates being an antihero. It is not heroic, it is not overly romantic or overly dramatic. It is raw and honest- as the best songs usually are.
In total, A N T I H E R O E S showcases the varying sides of Violet Night- with no specific genre labels or fan bases tying them down or forcing expectations upon the band to sound one certain way. And though none of these tracks have made their way to the stage yet- for obvious reasons- we are so excited to eventually hear them live.
