Check this out, Juliet!
We the Kings finally made their long awaited return to Bean Town last night to play a nearly sold out show at Brighton Music Hall.
Alongside local openers Mallcops, We The Kings played Boston for the first time since 2016, just one month after announcing their mini North East tour.
But before either band took the stage, Brighton Ave. was lined two blocks down with fans eagerly awaiting their favorite band’s return.
And at 8pm, Boston based Mallcops gave fans a sneak peak at what the rest of the night would bring.
“This song is a little bit emo. Who here is emo?” frontman Joey Del asked the crowd before being greeted with an abundance of screams.
The four piece band, made up of Del, his brother Jimmy Del, Tyler Graham, and Daniel Donovan formed in 2014 and are on their way to releasing their first full length album.
“We have one EP out so far,” Del told the crowd. “But our first full length is all done and will hopefully be out by the end of the summer. It’s called ‘We Made Plans to Self Destruct and Return to the Stars.”
Mallcops played around five songs before taking their final bows, and leaving the room filled with a buzz of anticipation.
It had been years since most of the crowd had seen the Floridan pop band and as soon as the clock struck 9, it was finally time for them to take the stage.
Opening with their 2007 single “Skyway Avenue,” We the Kings came out with a bang.
Though the relatively small room only held about 500 bodies, it felt as if the crowd had been transported straight out of Brighton and into the lot at a 2010 Warped Tour stop.
With everyone singing at the top of their lungs, and the band’s amps up to full volume- the show started off feeling larger than life. A tone that it kept up throughout the band’s hour and a half long set.
“Management was nervous about us playing this show just for fun,” frontman Travis Clark announced to the crowd. “It was only booked a little over two weeks ago, and they were worried people wouldn’t show, but you guys look beautiful.”
Joining Clark on stage were original band members Hunter Thompson and Danny Duncan, alongside later addition Coley O’Toole.
Noticeably absent from the show was bassist Charles Trippy, who Clark assured fans was still in the band.
“I know you are all wondering where a certain member of our band is, so I just want to let you know he’s not here because he’s having a baby,” Clark shared to a round of applause.
“Yes, thank you for congratulating us on his being pregnant. We did a lot,” he joked.
The band then played crowd favorites including “Sad Song,” “Secret Valentine,” and “I feel Alive,” which had choreographed dance moves.
And while the crowd was interactive throughout their set, no song got everyone moving like their final track – the one that made the band become a household name back in their beginnings- “Check Yes Juliet.”
After promising fans online that they’d play their hit not once, but TWICE, Clark ensured the crowd that he’d keep up his deal, but with a slight twist.
“I know if you follow us on Instagram you know that I said we’d play this next song twice if you came out to the show. But, we’re not going to play it the first time. We are going to sing it. And if you can sing the whole thing, then we will start playing.”
Up for the challenge, the crowd then launched into a slightly off-key a capella rendition, much to the amusement of the band- who occasionally joined in when the crowd paused for a lyric check.
“That was beautiful,” Clark chuckled, before jumping into their finale of the actual song.
