Friday is the best day of the week.
Not only is it the last day of the (standard) work week, thus meaning two days off in a row for all of those lucky enough to work Monday-Friday, but it ALSO happens to be the day nearly everyone releases new music- which means by the time Saturday and Sunday roll around we have brand new playlists full of new songs to check out.
And this Friday was no different.
With new tracks from Derek Sanders, Stand Atlantic, Sleep On It, and more, this week was one of the best for pop-rock fans everywhere. And because we want to make sure you didn’t miss any of our new favorites- we’ve compiled a list of the best releases of the week.
Check out our full lineup below, and be sure to follow our Spotify Playlist linked below to keep up with all things new music.
“Falling Further Faster” – Sleep On It
Originally released as an exclusive track that the band only shared with fans who proved that they had registered to vote in the US, “Falling Further Faster,” is the latest and greatest track by Sleep On It. Recorded as a B-Side for their album “Pride & Disaster,” the track fits perfectly with the rest of the album’s punk-pop sound, with an easy to learn chorus and drums that will have you air-drumming down the sidewalk as you listen along.
And while most fans can’t enough of the song, it has caused a bit of an upset with others who are wondering why the heck it was cut from the album and what other tracks didn’t make it that may also be certified bangers.
But regardless of the delay in it’s release, “Falling Further Faster” is a 10/10 track, and we can’t wait to hear it on their upcoming tour.
“Shh” – Stand Atlantic
Another song that was released earlier this week to those lucky enough to catch it’s radio debut, “Shh,” is the latest song by Australian band Stand Atlantic.
The first release since last year’s single “Hate Me (Sometimes),” “Shh” is Stand Atlantic returning with a vengeance.
With heavier bass and guitar than their previous songs, “Shh” is one of the angstier tracks released by the pop-punk band, taking them further into the punk realm than the pop-one. And while this song is definitely a change from their usual sound, we are all for it and can’t wait to hear more of it in the future.
“Better Drugs” – Little Hurt
Little Hurt, the brainchild of former The Mowgli’s singer Colin Dieden, made their way onto our radar yesterday with the release of their third single “Better Drugs.”
Co-written by Twin XL’s Cameron Walker, “Better Drugs,” is one of many anti-love-love songs to be released on the most romantic day of the year, poking fun at feelings of loneliness by saying “I need better love or better drugs.”
And while the song is one of the sadder tracks on our list this week, the upbeat instrumentals and catchy chorus make you forget that you are listening to a track about being rejected and instead get you head bobbing along as you hit “repeat” for the tenth time in a row.
“Still Talk To You” – Morgan Keller
Described as a “cheeky anti-Valentine’s Day anthem,” “Still Talk To You” is pop singer Morgan Keller’s second release, following last year’s “Who’s There?”
And while the song may not be the best song to listen to if you’re a Valentine’s Day fan, it IS the perfect track to blast if you are trying to get over an ex or are beginning to realize you can do better than your current situation.
With an incredibly catchy beat, this song will get stuck in your head instantly as you swoon over Keller’s vocals. It stands as one of our top releases of the week.
And if you like what you hear, be sure to follow Morgan on Twitter, Instagram, as well as on Spotify to stay up-to-date on all upcoming releases.
“Learn To Love The Lie” – Four Year Strong
While this track was released on Tuesday we felt as though it had to be included in our weekend roundup because it’s just that good. (And we MAY be suckers for anything that shout out our home state.)
The third single to be released from the Massachusetts native’s upcoming album “Brain Pain,” “Learn to Love The Lie,” describes the falling out of a relationship as two people begin to grow apart but refuse to admit it.
““Learn To Love The Lie” was one of the first songs we wrote for Brain Pain. It’s about being stuck in a mutually miserable relationship, but you’re both too much of a coward to leave. If you’re going to lie to yourself about being happy, you might as well learn to love it. Let’s not kid ourselves…we’ve all been there,” the band shared via the comments on the song’s video.
If you’re looking for a song to add to your confusing relationship playlist, this song makes the perfect prequel to “Still Talk To You” AND “Better Drugs.”
“My Rock and Roll Heart” – Derek Sanders (EP)
The only multi-track release to make our list this week, “My Rock and Roll Heart” is the debut solo release by Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders.
The EP, which dropped at midnight on Valentine’s Day, features five acoustic covers of various rock and roll songs as re-imagined by Sanders.
The track listing includes “But Lauren,” “Punk Rock Princess,” “Rocks Tonic Juice Magic,” “A Praise Chorus,” and “August In Bethany,” all of which Sander’s describes as songs that shaped his musical upbringing.
You can also check out all five songs and their visualizers via Equal Vision’s YouTube playlist.
“One Single Second” – Set It Off
After releasing their album “Midnight” earlier last year, Set It Off have not stopped moving.
Not only did they drop an album and complete three legs of their “Midnight” World Tour, but they also performed on a full tour with Sleeping With Sirens, AND put out a consistently growing EP titled “After Midnight,” which gained it’s latest addition yesterday with the release of “One Single Second.”
Keeping with the seeing theme of anti-love songs set forth by today’s other releases, “One Single Second,” is a track all about insecurity and infidelity in a relationship- something Set It Off are well known for writing about. And much like their other tracks- this one is equally fantastic.
It may not be the perfect love song, but it is the perfect song to get your anger out to- which is why we love Set It Off so damn much.
“No Time To Die” – Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish is an eighteen year old with four GRAMMYs. Do we need to give you a further explanation as to why this song made our list?
“Our House (The Mess We Made)” – You Me At Six
“Our House (The Mess We Made)” is You Me At Six’s first release of the year- and it’s one created for a cause.
After witnessing the effects of this winter’s devastating Australian wildfires and the recent calls to action by young activists such as Greta Thunberg, the British rock band were inspired to create a song that not only sounded catchy but that also was politically charged.
“Music has the ability to unite strangers & to empower both stand alone individuals, but also large groups just as potently,” lead singer Josh Franceschi shared via Twitter.
And the best news, since the song is so well written and a perfect dance track- despite the devastating lyrical backstory- is that all profits from sales and streaming will go to aid those affected in Australia- so we have even more reason to listen to it on repeat.
