Following the success of his socially distanced drive-in concert in Anaheim earlier this month, Andrew McMahon held a short Instagram Live performance last night to premiere his new song “Get On My Wave.”

As he often does, McMahon began this evening’s livestream by shaking up a cocktail to sip during his performance. He quickly panned the camera over to his wife, Kelly, who shyly waved and ducked out of frame, before bringing the livestream into his living room setup by the piano. He began the show with his song “Catching Cold,” from “The Pop Underground” EP (2013)- which marked his debut as a solo artist. McMahon, who is a passionate performer, played with his eyes closed, letting his upper body sway to the music.

Upon finishing the song, McMahon slid into “Monday Flowers,” a soulful ballad from his 2018 album “Upside Down Flowers,” though not before warning the audience that he may have forgotten how to play it. Unsurprisingly, he nailed it, with no noticeable mistakes. Afterwards, he briefly mentioned the recent controversial Chainsmokers concert in the Hamptons, saying that it wasn’t properly socially distanced and “could fuck it up for all of us” in terms of future shows.

Next, he launched into playing “After the Fire,” another upbeat song from “The Pop Underground.” He stumbled at first, claiming that he’s forgotten how to play this song as well, but he quickly regained his riffs and created a stellar performance.

After playing this piece, he revealed to the audience that there will be a fundraiser for the Dear Jack Foundation next week, featuring an auction of original vinyls such as the Jack’s Mannequin’s 10 year anniversary edition of “Everything In Transit,” an album that has made a lasting impact on many listeners worldwide. He chuckled as he mentioned that he probably shouldn’t be telling everybody this information so early, but he just couldn’t help himself.

This is the second fundraiser McMahon has hosted this year to benefit the Dear Jack Foundation, following his drive-in concert series. The Dear Jack Foundation is a charity program designed to help adolescents and young adults with cancer, founded by McMahon himself–who is a leukemia survivor.

McMahon then performed the acoustic version of his new song, “Get On My Wave,” as hundreds of live comments rolled in praising the tune. Instagram users commented mentioning how long they’ve been loyal fans for—some as long as nearly 20 years and still going strong—as he continued to play. Countless heart eyes emojis graced the comment section as McMahon seemed to lose himself in his music.

McMahon closed out his show with the classic Jack’s Mannequin tune “Holiday From Real,” after leaving fans with these words of wisdom: “Until next time, stay safe, wear a mask, and believe in science”. He put his all into this performance, his voice carrying beautifully over his strong piano melodies. He ended the livestream looking at the camera with a genuine smile on his face.
