It is no secret that the music industry is a male dominated field.

With only 2 out of the 10 highest earning musicians of both 2019 and 2020 being women, and only 2% of producers and 20% of all signed musical artists being female, it is clear both statistically and visually that women are not always given the fairest chances when it comes to making a name for themselves.

But thankfully, over the past few years there have been an influx of female and non-binary artists and industry workers who are looking to change that dynamic and make the industry a better, more inclusive place for all.

And one such person who is doing their part is musician Courtney LaPlante with the launch of her new podcast, Good For A Girl.

A powerhouse vocalist and front woman for the metal band Spiritbox, LaPlante is well versed in battling the sexism and bias that exists within the music community. But instead of letting it keep her down or stop her from pursuing her career goals, LaPlante has continually tackled the obstacles put in front of her and is now helping to do the same for other women and non-binary folks.

Officially launched last week, Good For A Girl is a conversation style podcast where LaPlante chats with other women and non-binary members of the music world in order to discuss their battles with gender inequality, gatekeeping, and how they have successfully managed to overcome or handle those issues in their career paths.

And as a perfect starter to the series, LaPlante spends the first episode chatting with “Metal Tastemaker” Caity Babs, who has made a name for herself as one of the leading ladies of the rock and metal radio world. Discussing the long road to getting herself known and taken seriously, as well as the many turns it took for her to find her niche, Babs shares advice for young creatives looking to get involved in music, while also giving fun anecdotes about her life along the way.

Making the hour long episode feel more like listening in on two of your friends chatting, LaPlante and Babs both make listeners feel understood and leave them feeling as though they’ve gained a better understanding of how to approach their own dreams- however big or small they may currently be.

With future episodes set to take place every other week going forward, LaPlante will interview people from both behind the scenes and on the stage to give listener’s a better idea of what the entertainment world is really like for people on all sides.

“This is a place for us to let our guard down and relate to one another,” LaPlante shares. “There are just as many fascinating people behind the scenes as there are fascinating people under the spotlight, and learning from their experience and expertise can help the rest of us get closer to our own goals within this industry.”
