If you are a fan of 90s pop and R&B, this is not a release you want to miss out on.
Enter, “There Must Be Something,” the latest single from up and coming pop band Cry Baby.
The eighth single to be released by the band since their formation in 2018, “There Must Be Something” is everything a 90s baby burnt out on old tapes and dying for a new wave of nostalgia could possibly want.
Using clear influence from the boybands of the early 2000s and R&B vibes of the past 30 years, Cry Baby create a sound that is familiar yet so distinct from anything else currently on the radio. With a clear influence stemmed by the band’s roots in DIY and a punk upbringing, the group aren’t afraid to experiment with sounds and genre mixing- which is clear not only through this single, but also all seven previous releases.
“‘Must Be Something’ is a pumped up, 90’s infused pop track synonymous with Cry Baby,” the group share. “The song is about calling out lovers who can’t seem to make up their mind, highlighted by Jamie demanding “tell me is it true, do I mean something to you,” an ear worm hook and dazzling synths, ‘Must Be Something’ is catchy and full of energy.”
As for where this new track fits in with the band’s future? This new single is just one piece of the band’s upcoming debut record, Everything I Didn’t Say.
Set to release August 27th, the EP will feature seven tracks, including this week’s release as well as previous singles “She Likes To Get High” and “1991.” And though debut releases often put a significant amount of pressure on new bands as they fully introduce their sound to the world, Cry Baby are confident that this album best represents who they have become over the past two years.
“‘Everything I Didn’t Say’ was made with a completely DIY approach. We were involved in every step of the project -shooting album covers, filming music videos, printing and designing shirts,” the band added. “When people listen to this record they are getting something truly home grown… [The EP is] a mixtape of the past two years for Cry Baby.”
