It appears that Demi Lovato is once more taking a step back from Twitter, after a slew of derogatory and offensive jokes were tweeted at the star in response to a meme she shared.

Amidst a frenzy of Super Bowl related tweets Sunday Night, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer took to Twitter to share a since deleted meme seemingly mocking the immigration status of rapper 21 Savage.

Earlier Sunday morning reports broke that Savage, whose legal name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is staying in the United States illegally after his visa expired in 2006.

Savage’s arrest has come as a shock to many fans and non-fans alike, all of whom believed the rapper was from Georgia, as he claimed in numerous songs and charity related efforts.

However, now that news has broken of Savage’s legal status as a citizen of the United Kingdom, people everywhere are having their share of making memes and jokes about his citizenship.

While most of these memes have been received with little or no backlash- as they do not touch upon the actual subject of Savage’s potential deportation, but rather his British upbringing- that was not the case for Lovato.

Immediately after the singer shared a meme, which depicted a person using a feather pen and candle light to write with the caption “This is how 21 Savage be Writing Verses,” hundreds of people flooded her mentions telling her just how uncool it was to make jokes about Savage’s situation.

But instead of just asking her to not encourage or make jokes, nearly every person replying mentioned Lovato’s history of substance abuse.

Lovato, who overdosed in July, recently re-joined social media after a four month stint in rehab. Since her return, she has been subject to hundreds of messages and replies on all accounts referring to her as a “crack head” “drug addict,” or telling her to go “shoot up.”

While Lovato normally stays quiet about any comments regarding her overdose, this time she deactivated her Twitter account and took to Instagram to further explain why.

Lovato, who has also been a strong advocate for mental health and bullying, has fans coming to her defense, though, many citing her years of advocacy work and personal struggles as reasons to leave her addiction out of their replies.

And, some fans took to socials to point out that in 2017 Lovato came out in support of DACA and told fans that she believed the US should welcome and celebrate people of all backgrounds.

“I see it as, we should be helping, and embracing people coming from different countries. If you are unsure on what your thoughts or where your stances are, do more research, read up on it and get involved in whatever way that you can.” (Lovato via USA Today)

Only time will tell how long this social media hiatus will last.

Updates to follow on both Lovato and Savage’s deportation status.
