Demi Lovato has been openly vocal about her political beliefs since leaving her Disney days behind so it should come as no surprise to fans that the pop star has taken to the recording studio to release a scathing political commentary byway of a beautifully produced ballad.

“Commander in Chief” which dropped this morning is an open and brutally honest recounting of Lovato’s own experience with the current President and his administration. Co-written by FINNEAS, Julia Michaels and Lovato, the track comments on the administration’s lack of care regarding issues such as Black Lives Matter, immigration, LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive freedom, questioning their morality and ability to sleep despite tearing apart the lives of American citizens.

With lines such as “if I did the things you do I couldn’t sleep,” and “how does it feel to still be able to breathe?” the song makes reference to several social and political movements as well as the current Coronavirus pandemic.

The song is Lovato’s second new single in the past few weeks, following the beautiful and empowering “Still Have Me” on October 1st.
