Any Selenator knows, the minute you hear the magic words (in Selena Gomez’s voice) “DJ Snakeeeee,” something is musically about to go down. In this case, it’s “Selfish Love,” the latest collaboration between DJ Snake and Gomez. “Selfish Love” comes after the release of Gomez’s most recent single, “Baila Conmigo.” Both are included in her upcoming Spanish album Revelación, set to release March 12th.
After the success of their 2018 hit “Taki Taki,” also featuring Cardi B and Ozuna, Snake and Gomez have maintained a great friendship publically, leading fans to root for a collaboration for quite some time. Snake first teased “Selfish Love” on social media, posting a fan art photo of himself and Gomez with “Selfish Love” written on the bottom. “Selfish Love” was released on March 4th.
With the continued anticipation of Revelación, fans are being treated to some strong Gomez collaborations as of recent. Revelación is her first Spanish EP and is a celebration/exploration of her Latina heritage. Back in January, her collaboration with Rauw Alejandro and Tainy for “Baila Conimgo” released and will also be included in Revelación.
There is a lot to unpack with “Selfish Love,” between the actual song and music video. On a basic level, it’s an upbeat, pop/dance song with a mix of Spanish and English lyrics (in the pre-chorus.) It’s actually somewhat reminiscent of another Gomez song released last year, “Boyfriend.” Both have a flirty, fun vibe but in terms of their message, a woman is in control of the love she wants and deserves.
The music video for “Selfish Love” is also visually similar to the music video for “Boyfriend.” They both have unique, artistic elements that feature men entering a space where women are undeniably (yet seemingly unbeknownst to them) in control of the interaction. “Selfish Love” takes place in a spa “Selena’s: Hair and Beauty” that include some interesting methods of pampering, from hair stylists hiding behind hair walls to extreme hair dryers. Hands coming out of walls overall was a big theme. Mirrors also appeared a few times, from Gomez’s hand mirror when the first man walks in to the mirror wall as he is prepped for his haircut.
One element from the video that particularly stood out was the use of portraits. The staff/dancers wearing the different Gomez portraits over their faces helped bring the portraits to life and helped feature more of Gomez in a creative way. There were also the animated portraits along the walls of Snake and Gomez, again helping to feature them both in interesting ways within the video. Overall, the music video is definitely worth checking out while listening to the song.
Overall, the anticipation and excitement for Revelacióncontinues to grow. “Selfish Love” is available everywhere now! Buy and stream wherever you get your music! Also be on the lookout for Gomez on the April 2021 cover of Vogue.
