Hayley Kiyoko is ringing in Pride Month the best way that she knows how- by releasing a brand new single all about learning to accept yourself and your worth.
“Chance,” which is the singer’s second single of the year following April’s “Found My Friends,” explores young love and the constant stream of “what if’s?” that come with having a new love interest who you can’t quite read.
Inspired by Kiyoko’s own struggle with love and pushing her feelings to the side out of a fear of rejection, “Chance” navigates the uncertainty that can arise when trying to decide if you want to pursue someone or if they even feel similarly.
“‘Chance’ is a song based on those moments when I denied my true feelings for someone out of fear of rejection, and therefore didn’t allow someone to take a chance on me,” the singer shares. “I hope this song empowers people to push past their own self-doubt and realize how worthy they are of love.”
In addition to the new release, Kiyoko also released a self-directed music video to accompany the song.
Starring Kiyoko and actress Alexandra Shipp, the music video showcases two friends falling in love after realizing how perfectly they complimented each other. Contrasting the message in the track, the music video showcases what a romance could have been like if Kiyoko had taken a chance on herself and perused those who she walked away from, or vise versa.
A beautiful and happy representation of a queer relationship, Kiyoko’s hope for the video was that it would remind fans and casual viewers that they are worth more than their brains may let them believe, and that you are worthy of love regardless of what anyone else may tell you.
“I’m always starved for hopeful queer stories onscreen, and I really wanted to direct a narrative that focused on the happier ‘honeymoon’ phase of a relationship, to show what can happen if we take a chance on ourselves and have that love reciprocated,” Kiyoko continues. “The video is meant to portray those first few weeks, months, or even years when you are utterly head over heels in love with each other.”
You can stream “Chance” out now wherever you stream music and be sure to check out the new music video, linked above.
