Singer-songwriter Natalia Soul is definitely one to watch. Her unique sound that blends jazz, pop and neo soul is hypnotic and soothing.

She released her debut EP Hurt You last month and has exciting plans for a new yoga influenced album coming soon. Her positive attitude and passion for her art will endear you to her.

Now fresh off Hurt You, Natalia Soul took some time to chat to Second Society Report about her exciting plans for 2021, her EP and overcoming the challenges of last year.

Second Society Report: Thank you for taking time to talk to us. Last year was crazy! How is 2021 treating you?

Natalia Soul: Hi! Thank You for having me! This reaches me on my 4th snow day haha! So still better than 2020?

Jokes aside, I’m excited. This is a promising year. It’s has a finalizing projects type of energy, which I love.

SSR: Apart from music, what else have you been doing to keep busy and stay positive?

Natalia Soul: I am a custom framer by trade, so I do that! I love to work with my hands. I also practice meditation and yoga, write and read.

SSR: To the music! For readers who have not listened to your music (yet!), how would you describe your sound?

Natalia Soul: Rhythmic driven, soulful, jazzy, and somewhat aggressive. It depends on the project, and what is being expressed but some of these core elements will be there.

For example in my next projects, you can expect to hear a lot of those Bill Evan’s type of chords mixed in with some South-American drumming and pop melodies.

SSR: What does your music say about you?

Natalia Soul: That I’m trying, haha. And I’m always searching, changing, and evolving.

SSR: Hurt You is described as a single about “loving at your own risk, breaking hearts, and desire” – do you write based on personal experiences or fictional situations?

Natalia Soul: Both, because I strive for a good balance between relatability and enough space for the listeners to fill in with their own memories, and life experiences. So then it becomes their song, so to speak.

SSR: What was the inspiration for the release?

Natalia Soul: I feel like it took shape as it went. But really if I have to put it in words, I wanna say it’s that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Even broken people deserve to love and be loved, and love stories that were a bit more realistic I guess.

SSR: Have you written any songs specifically about the state of the world right now?

Natalia Soul: I have one song that’s called “Age of the Light” (unreleased) that is more of a call to action. I am an action driven individual, so my “protest songs” are more “let’s do this” type of songs.

SSR: Do you have any other plans relating to this release? Like a video or online performance?

Natalia Soul: Yes, every weekend I cook and sing on my Instagram and talk about each song off the E.P. and some unreleased ones.

Now that the weather is getting better, we’re planning on an outdoor performance that would go live, and yes, we have some little videos coming up.

SSR: How has it been being an artist in a time when you cannot tour?

Natalia Soul: I didn’t really do a lot of touring, but all the local scene was gone overnight and that was rough. I was getting ready to go to Europe but that was the first thing to go.

I came to terms with the fact that what makes me an artist is the fact that I make art, and any platform I get to share it with is valid.

SSR: How have you been working to promote your music and expand your reach?

Natalia Soul: Lots of online streaming and my amazing PR agent Rebecca Potzner, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Banded PR. If it wasn’t for her, my music would still be only in my hard drive. With all live promo gone, I cannot even begin to tell you how much of a godsend she was and still is.

SSR: We heard through the grapevine that you’re working on a mantra music album focused on meditation and yoga music. Can you tell us more?

Natalia Soul: Oh yes! It’s called Goddess Beats. I have a friend/ yogini muse who is an Instagram influencer and model @thegivingmom who inspired this whole thing. I create tracks in which I use mantras and my knowledge of composition in order to create songs that help your mind ease into the flow or your meditation practice. The principle is that the mind needs little objects to munch on. If you saturate it, it has no other choice but to give up and surrender. So it’s a very cool project!

SSR: What are you looking forward to the most post-Covid? Are there things you’ve learned that you’ll carry forward like hobbies, a way of viewing things etc.?

Natalia Soul: Hugs! And being able to see people’s true nature when they’re put under stress. I re-learned that when a person shows you who they are, you ought to believe them!

Also, creating routines even for the most meaningless of things around the house saves you a lot of time!

SSR: Is there anything you’d like to share with your fans that we haven’t touched on?

Natalia Soul: First off, how incredibly grateful I am that they support me and my music. Then, please follow me on Spotify, so you don’t miss any of my upcoming singles!

For the mystic crowd, we’re cooking up an amazing zodiac inspired album. And we have some more tribal pop gems coming up this year!
