Lia Kay has been a musician since birth.
At the age of 7, the Russian born songstress found herself competing across the nation as a classically trained pianist. By 12, she began composing her own songs, and by university age she received a degree studying classical piano and jazz vocals.
Using her decades of expertise, Kay then went on to find a love of writing her own music and this year made her streaming debut with her new single, “Walk Away.”
Released this past week, “Walk Away” expresses Kay’s past feelings for a partner who she knew she needed to “walk away” from, but couldn’t seem to sever the ties.
“I wrote this song while I was in my last year of university about someone I loved very much,” Kay shares. “After dating on and off, it became clear that timing was just really not on our side.”
“I remember napping in one of the practice rooms and hearing a melody in my head along with a clear realization of having to move on. I woke up and conveniently enough I was beside a piano. I ended up writing this song in a practice room, finally seeing that I had to let him go.”
Echoing the notion that you must love yourself before you can truly let someone else love you- the single puts Kay’s musicianship on display, with strong vocals, beautiful piano backing, and adding an electronic overlay to transform what could be a somber ballad into a more upbeat dance track.
Giving us high hopes for future tracks by Kay, “Walk Away” has potential to be one of the best electro-pop singles of the month.
You can stream “Walk Away” out now, and be sure to follow Lia Kay on social media to stay up to date on all things new music.
