Taking care of your mental health is important.
But despite the fact that nearly everyone struggles from time to time with staying mentally healthy, the concept of mental illness or mental healthcare is still taboo in many communities- and oftentimes outpourings of support or awareness are brought far too late after a tragedy has struck and people are forced to encounter their own inner demons in the worst ways.
In the music world, these tragedies happen far too often, and after 2017’s loss of both Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington to suicide, followed closely by Avicii’s suicide the following April, journalist and life coach Mari Fong realized that music needed more of an open conversation surrounding mental health- thus forming her podcast, CHECK YOUR HEAD.
Having launched in December 2019, Fong created CHECK YOUR HEAD as a way to help encourage conversations about mental illness and healing processes between musicians, fans and other industry professionals.
In each episode, which vary in length between 40 minutes to an hour, Fong interviews both a member of the music world, as well as a mental health professional in order to help create dialogue and find solutions for some of the most common battles both musicians and average listener’s face.
Tackling everything from ADHD to relationship and childhood trauma, Fong and her guest leave no stones unturned and truly do their part to help battle the stigma surrounding mental illness. And with high profile guests such as Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Frank Zummo (SUM 41), Kevin Lyman (Vans Warped Tour), Linda Ronstadt and more, Fong helps to showcase the idea that it doesn’t matter how successful, how famous, or how much money you may have- mental illness can still impact your life, and mental healthcare is important for everyone.
