Summer can officially begin now that Mayday Parade has given us the perfect hit for the season with “Kids of Summer.”

Sonically this track is the right next step following the releases of their 2018 album Sunnyland and their 2020 EP Out of Here. Throughout their discography, the band has gone through different phases, being a quintessential neon-punk band during the span of 2008-2013, and progressively finding a medium between holding onto their roots and growing with the ever changing scene.

Back in November, Jake Bundrick (drummer) hinted that the band were “writing a song about missing warped tour and concerts in general. […] maybe you’ll hear it one day.” He has now since confirmed “Kids of the Summer” is the aforementioned song.

Even with the subtle nods to Warped Tour, the song feels so much bigger than just the idea of missing concerts. “Kids of Summer” makes you feel like the world is at your fingertips – playing heavy on the ethos of the carefree attitude that seems to come alive during the summer months.

During my first listen through of the song, I felt a rush of nostalgia for summer days at outdoor gigs and the accompanying summer nights spent with friends. “Kids of Summer” would have definitely been an amazing closer to sign off a Warped Tour set.

The accompanying music video was shot by Guadalupe Bustos, most notable for this work with The Maine. The video shows the band partaking in classic summer activities, such as mini-golf, being out by the water, bowling, and nights by the fire.

This October marks the 10th anniversary of the band’s third studio album Mayday Parade, which includes some fan favorite songs “Oh Well, Oh Well” and “When You See My Friends”. So hopefully this release is just the beginning of more exciting news from Mayday Parade this year, we’ll just have to wait and see.
