Let’s face it. Some artists, no matter how great their catalog, will always be remembered for that ONE song. You’ve got Natasha Bedingfield with “Pocketful Of Sunshine,” Leona Lewis with “Bleeding Love” and Bastille with “Pompeii” (though, personally, the Seeb remix of their song “Grip” is their best, hands down), along with so many others, and you can absolutely throw Milky Chance in there for their mid-2010’s smash “Stolen Dance.” As of this writing, the song has amassed almost one BILLION streams on Spotify and almost 800 million views on YouTube. It is an indie pop jam for the ages, but they’re still pulling big numbers and keeping things fresh with their latest releases, including “Synchronize.”
In the video, Milky Chance, made up of Clemens Rehbein and Phillip Dausch, find themselves in a strange, dystopian society and its cult-ish inhabitants. It’s like walking into an apocalyptic Woodstock, with everyone dressed in hippie clothes and dancing around uninhibited. The main lyric is, “I love it when we’re synchronized,” but, for the first parts of the video, almost none of the individuals they’ve come across are dancing, or flailing, whatever you want to call it, in sync. Some of it is almost like that scene from “Shutter Island” when Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo make their way onto the grounds of the mental facility, and the “patients” are chained up, raking grass, and happily waving like they just saw an old friend. This video is, clearly, much more playful than that, as these people are harmless, but it still makes you feel a little uneasy.
While Rehbein and Dausch are unsure of what to do at first, they soon allow themselves to open up and move freely with the strange dancers. Quickly, they too are lost in whatever is causing this dancey uproar in real time. While it is made clear that the end of the world is approaching, as fiery eruptions begin to dominate the airspace, the group clings to each other, without fear, in the hopes that when the end comes, they will all perish together. The video could be viewed as a parallel to the uncertainty the entire world has faced over the last two years, but with the idea that, if you just allow yourself the chance to let go of all of that pent up fear and anger, you may just find that you can let loose and keep yourself going even when you thought you couldn’t.
The song itself, which is currently making waves on their home country of Germany’s radio charts at #3, and in the US at #23 on the Alternative charts, is the type of breezy electro-pop track that will end up on everyone’s “Chill” or “Summer Driving Songs” playlists this year. It very well may be a sleeper hit for Milky Chance, who, after a decade in the game, are showing no signs of slowing down.
