Goldpark, an impressive alternative rock trio from Nashville, is back with their newest single “Lady Lightyear.” The group follows in the footsteps of acts like COIN and The Happy Fits with arena-ready pop/rock tunes with solid hooks, catchy guitar riffs, and an overall positive vibe that will make the listener want to get up and dance.

Their first release, 2020’s “Morning Light,” is, at this time, their most popular song on streaming services, and deservedly so. Lead singer Wes James, who, on this track at least, sounds strikingly similar to Niall Horan in the best way possible, delivers an epic vocal performance, while guitarist Andrew Smith and drummer Kyle Neblett tear it up behind him. The track, about seeing an old lover move on with someone else, portrays the emotion and desperation behind not getting closure, and it is an absolutely stellar tune. Other tracks like “Killer Queen (What I Need)” and “Wild Love” are catalog highlights.

On “Lady Lightyear,” the trio tell the story of a love affair that is, quite literally, out of  this world. The man, seemingly earthbound, falls in love with a woman from somewhere far beyond his reach, and is immediately infatuated; “Gravity just burst into color. Feel the heartbeat louder than thunder.” It is a typical alt rock/pop jam straight out of the 2010’s, but it is infectious and joyful nonetheless. The group described it as, “A song for all of the Milky Way and beyond to enjoy together.”

While the rumors of NASA sending nude pictures to space in the hopes of luring aliens to our midst were quickly debunked, maybe “Lady Lightyear” could be considered a more PG-appropriate gift. Maybe send it as an NFT?

The group’s newest project, Goldpark Two, is set to drop later this year. Perhaps they will continue to explore other fantastical, celestial topics with their songwriting.
