Following in the footsteps of artists like Kehlani and Queen Naija, TheBabyDon stakes her claim as a fresh new presence in Hip-Hop and R&B. Her new single “Mood” is a breezy, by-the-numbers pop/R&B tune that showcases her effortless cool, clever wordplay, and ability to ride a beat with precision and originality. The song essentially serves as a vehicle to woo a person of interest, with BabyDon stating that she’s down for anything, and that she herself can bring it; “You know like I know. I take you on high roads, I make you scream high notes.” The constant fluidity of lyrical sections throughout the track reflect the playful excitement exhibited by BabyDon, perhaps reflected in real life with strings of flirty text messages or DMs. This is clearly someone BabyDon has been interested with for quite some time, and she is reveling in the chance to finally grab this person’s attention; “I can be here for a moment, then I let my cards play. We came a long way from meeting in the hallways, girl.”

The video for the track highlights Babydon’s infectious, energetic personality. She dances and moves around an artsy, professional-looking space, which is likely used for photoshoots or other promotional materials. However, Don doesn’t ever pose for the camera, or try on any of the outfits lined up on racks behind her. Instead, she allows the music to, quite literally, move her, in every which way in the visual representation of her excitement and expression of sexual freedom.

Her fashion in the video could come off as hard, maybe even street. It does not match up with the voice, which is light and sweet. Like you can almost see the smile as she records in the booth. This factor not only makes you root for her to get her chance with the person she’s singing to, but makes you want to get up and dance with her. All anyone says when approaching someone you want to be in a relationship with is, “Just be cool.” Sometimes you think, “But I am already!” or even makes you question how to do that. BabyDon shows us how to do it with ease, her confidence more than enough to raise an eyebrow.
