Nickelback is getting a synth ballad makeover this month as pop duo Noir Disco remix their hit single “Rockstar.”

A song that has become infamous in pop culture alongside Nickelback’s fellow hit “Photograph,” “Rockstar” serves as a commentary on celebrity and an unwavering desire to become rich and famous- regardless of the side effects.

Using the track’s original lyrics but stripping away the actual rock elements, Chicago based Noir Disco have now given the track an even deeper meaning by aligning it with a somber piano and an 80’s inspired soundscape.

Both showcasing Noir Disco’s legitimate musical abilities, from creating a haunting melody and vocal track that will completely disarm you from your perceptions of Nickelback’s original as well as giving highlight to the duo’s humor, the new “Rockstar” is both a commentary and parody that extend beyond the limits of straight comedy.

Using the track to highlight Nickelback’s original intentions (pointing out the flaws in the idolization of celebrities and toxicity of fame) while also poking fun at the band itself- Noir Disco have a bit of fun along the way by reimagining the lyrics int her most literal form.

In an accompanying music video, the band overlap lyrics about the absurdity of an MTV Cribs home and large bathrooms with clips of Nickelback vocalist Chad Kroeger showing off the house/bathroom he eventually purchased and showed off on MTV’s show- as well as various exaggerated clips of women, an ever present gold “star,” and a bit of additional commentary of virtual reality.

But you truly need to watch the video to understand fully.

And the latest single to be released from the band’s upcoming album Oh My Nightmare, we are feeling pretty confident this will be an album you don’t want to miss.
