Back in 2019, CT-based alt pop outfit Quinn released “Give it a Go,” an anthem for young love in which two people who might not be at the greatest places in their current lives decide to try to make it work. The single features groovy, driving guitar and soaring vocals. Today, it’s nestled in as the third track on Quinn’s debut EP, “Depression Nap.” The group shows their range on this release, and it’s a very promising start for this up-and-coming band.

Quinn hails from Middletown, CT, and is composed of Quinn Miller on lead vocals, Mike Umba on guitar, Joao Joaquim on bass, and Nick Genovese on drums. While still a fairly new band, having completed their current lineup earlier in 2020, Quinn has already played a variety of venues including Space Ballroom in Hamden, CT, and several locations on Boston’s Newbury Street.  Together, they bring a tight blend of punk-infused pop with powerful, often relatable vocals, with fans likening them to acts like Paramore and The Front Bottoms.

The first two tracks of “Depression Nap” take a slower, almost sleepier approach than “Give it a Go,” harkening to the EP’s title. However, it is impossible to fall asleep to Quinn. The opening track, “Bb,” does not make any sacrifices in Quinn’s vocal power to build its more melancholy tone. “That’s Why” also digs into feelings of depression and loneliness while still maintaining anthemic vocals and a power that comes across as empowering in spite of the troubles the lyrics illustrate. “Give it a Go” serves as a danceable interruption between “That’s Why” and “tiny talks,” a gentler track reflecting on insecurity. The EP ends with “Rugrats,” which perhaps most succinctly ties up the threads of anxiety and tribulations associated with early adulthood that encompass this album. The song ends with a resounding “You’re so much more than what you think people think about you.”

“Depression Nap,” as its name suggests, speaks heavily to hard emotions and exhaustion. Yet, at no point does it feel resigned. Rather, Quinn puts every ounce of energy into her performance, giving me the feeling that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Though “Depression Nap” speaks to exhaustion, it also very much speaks to tenacity and determination. Quinn has released an engaging first EP, and we are greatly looking forward to seeing what they bring in the future.
