When Seaway released their single “Big Vibe” earlier this year they made big waves in the pop-punk scene.

Changing up their traditional sound to cover a broader scope of the pop-punk world, including elements of top 40s, alt rock, and dashes of electro pop, the band launched into their new era, announcing a new album of the same title and subsequently sending fans into a frenzy as they prepared their ears for new music that would hopefully live up to the hype.

With singles “Wild Things” and “Still Blue” following shortly after, Seaway began to set the stage for their new album and now, just two months after the first single’s debut the band have officially released Big Vibe into the world. And it could not have better surpassed the hype.

Opening on the upbeat pop rock track “Brain in a Jar,” Big Vibe starts off strong as it gets listeners hyped up on the promise of the following ten tracks. With carefree lyrics about letting go and “feeling good,” the song then leads into the title track which is a fan favorite that keeps the mood elevated and immediately makes you want to put on your dancing shoes.

The third song “Mrs. David,” continues this “big vibe” by putting a 2020 and pop-punk spin on the idea of “Mrs. Robinson,” and documents the feeling of pining after someone who you aren’t entirely sure you belong with or who feels the same way about you. With catchy beats and a chorus that is sure to get stuck in your head, “Mrs. David” is one of the best songs on the album, and perfectly flows into the previously released track “Still Blue.”

And while the following track “Wild Things,” will have you pondering your life choices while still dancing yourself around your living room, the band does take a moment to kick you right in the feels with track six, “Pathetic.”

An angsty, brutal pop punk song full of guitar distortion and darker tones, “Pathetic” is a self loathing anthem all about not fitting in and choosing to be yourself despite what others may say. With lyrics such as “I’m pathetic, I don’t deserve the skin I’m living in,” and “I’m pathetic, ya said it, ya meant it” the track is an ode to having your self-esteem beaten down but not letting it ruin you or change how you function.

And though it’s entirely valid to let yourself have a beat to wallow, the band doesn’t let you stay sad or disappointed for long as they immediately pick the mood back up with “Sweet Sugar,” a fun indie-rock sounding track all about letting your inner desires take control and choosing to have fun despite the fact your brain is telling you to go home.

The band’s angstier side is then brought back through “Peach.” Sonically reminiscent of Four Year Strong’s Brain Pain, this song features edgier lyrics with heavy guitar presence that helps tell the story of reaching the end of your metaphorical rope as your partner drags you on a guilt trip for the ages. Comparing the partner’s ego and ability to hold grudges to the softness of peach skin the track is one of the most biting on the album, giving a bit of punk-rock edge to an otherwise very upbeat and good-vibing tracklist.

“If You Let Me” then swoops in to showcase the band’s softer side once more with a beautiful pop-rock love song about toughing out the bad days and hoping to spend more time with someone you love. Featuring lyrical call backs to the previous track “Pathetic,” “If You Let Me” navigates the worst parts of being with someone and choosing to endure the rough patches together rather than be miserable apart- even if those rough patches include sleeping on a broken bed held up by books.

Big Vibe’s final two tracks then help wrap up the album’s themes byway of the angst filled “Wicked,” which pays homage to the fact that we live in a “shit world,” and “we’re sick of it,” and the final tune “Sick Puppy,” which calls back to “Brain in a Jar” and lyrics about falling in love.

Overall, Big Vibe is an album that could not have come at a better time. With catchy beats, groovy riffs, and lyrics that will get stuck in your head on the first listen, Seaway truly honed their past seven years of experience into an album that easily is their best and most cohesive release to date. With tracks for fans of all of the band’s sonic profiles and general moods, Big Vibe exceeded expectations and has us very hopeful for the band’s future.
